Anyone have any intel on why the use of this position (the semi reclined position specifically designed for takeoff and landing, and very handy on the a330s) is not yet allowed on 787? Any idea when it might be available?

I’m not sure what you mean. I flew the 787 both on the 9 & 10 in J and was able to have it reclined to the takeoff setting no problem.
Maybe some crew didn’t know about the feature? Especially as it’s a London based crew doing the PER-LHR-PER legs

Hmm this was the 95 to LAX. Perhaps it was th crew as you say. CSM said it “was not certified”

I had the same on the A330 when they first got the new seat, crew insisted it had to be upright and moved it without any further discussion.

I find on the A330 the crew don't care what position the seat is in as long as the light on the outside near the floor is green. If it's not green, they'll insist that it goes fully upright.

So the first thing I do as soon as I sit down is put it into the semi-reclined position and make sure the light is green. I've also had a few A330 flights where the seat controls have been inoperable so it's a good check to make sure it works before taking off.

I had it green but they werent having a bar of it.

I tried the 'semi' recline on my first A330 J flight with the Thompson seat and have never used it again...

I find it interesting/amusing that this sort of seat position even exists. I guess people have never heard of submarining.

And if you have to google it, you might want to skip past the dating references and bedtime activities, because I’m pretty sure jb’s referring to physics. ;)

Whilst on the outside the 787 J Seat looks like the A330 one, beneath the seat the mechanics are different. It therefore requires a different certification which they are working on. So if any crew mention on the 787 that it needs to be completely upright, they are correct. You’ll also notice that the green lights don’t come on as they are deactivated until the seats are certified.
