Full-body x-ray scanners will be installed at domestic airport screening points under a major overhaul of Australia's airport security protocols to be announced next week, which could also include restricting liquids and other items in carry-on baggage.

Why?

They don't work, aren't needed and are a complete waste of time and money. There is absolutely no reason for them.

This type of scanner should be banned due to extreme unreliability.

On every single occasion I have passed through one of the millimetre wave scanners (more than 50 times and without exception), I have recorded a false 'positive' reading and then had to be 'touched up' by the security staff. Not once did I have anything on my body that could of caused the false reading (except light clothing of course).

Liquid ban is a nonsense on domestic. But mention ‘security’ and we all have to shut up. Even when it’s not thought through. Has the risk increased? Just listening to the radio now about it. All it will do is help retailers sell stuff on the other side. Pity those who aren’t members of clubs having to fork out money for just a drink of water. And it creates a big enough pfaff with liquids at International terminals let alone domestic ones. And great inconvenience for those people just dropping off and welcoming people back. Broadly speaking, it'd have to be a nonsense on both or neither. The explosive doesn't care whether it's on a domestic A330 or an international B737.

And great inconvenience for those people just dropping off and welcoming people back.

If you're referring to non-flying pax going airside, that could feasibly end up being banned or restricted too eventually. Also Mandatory Photo ID for Domestic Air Travel.

Overnight travellers are unlikely to struggle under the existing international LAG restrictions. If they're using a litre of toiletries overnight that would be ... interesting

Just my personal opinion, but if the procedures in security in whatever airport cause you affront, you should be so thankful that the rest of your trips are so smooth.

Don't mind the full body scanners. If I can keep all my stuff in my bag too, that'd be nice.

Would dislike non-travellers being stopped from entering the sterile zone. If the security is so good, I'm unsure what the risk is. It's one of the nicer things about flying in Australia...

End of the day, I guess an airport/airliner is an attractive target, however if you look at where else one can walk in to with literally *anything*, it starts to look pretty secure

Reckon there won’t be much joy if they banned people entering but not flying not that this would actually bother me.

As far as security goes, I’m not convinced given the inconsistent application at different airports. Fine with the body scanner, have had it at Adelaide domestic a few months ago.

Way more damage could be caused at an airport well before these security checks come into place.

You can't take a 500mL bottle of water with you but you can take 5 x 100mL bottles of water as well as an empty 500mL bottle of water?

Can only hope that the technology continues to improve beyond the current stop-and-stand scanners.

Last time I went through one it detected something on my (uncovered) neck. Security were obliged to ask "Are you wearing a necklace or something?" Very hard to fight the urge to eye roll ...

I recall in one US airport they had bins for disposal of unopened liquids - to be donated to their troops. Erm, the liquids are being confiscated because of a possible explosive risk ... and they're going to be sent en masse to the troops?

In Japan when we accidentally brought water through the screening point they took the bottle and placed it on a machine I've never seen before, then moments later gave the all clear. No idea how effective the machine is within those 2-3 seconds.
