I know of the Qantas thread, but try as I might, could not locate a similar VA thread.

This thread is to advise successful waitlisted or instant upgrades (or those done through the Customer Service Centre), not the UpgradeMe (which are done with hard earned $). I suggest advising your status, details of the flight, points used plus time before flight advised (T-?? hours).

Flight: VA 1384 BNE/ADL
Points: 17,500
Confirmed: T-96 hours

Ticket was issued 2 Feb and upgrade applied for straight after ticketing processed.

I always search available J rewards before booking because Im too lazy to bid and wait for an upgrade closer to date as I dont want to risk flying Y but bookings I made this week.

Hubby status: WP
Im a pleb until March 1st (will be companion WP)

Booking made Jan 30th SYD-PER-SYD, phoned help desk as I was pressing payment button on 4 x Y seats and upgraded with WP comps over phone. Hopefully they wont downgrade plane but work trip so OK with paying Freedom fare for comps.

Booking made Jan 31st SYD-LST-SYD, online Y booking and then immediate online upgrade with points for 4 x flights (20K points)

Booking made Feb 2nd SYD-ADE-SYD, online Y booking and then immediate online upgrade with points for 4 x flights (30K points).

Status: Gold (myself and Mr J)

Booking made Sept 8th PER-MEL-HBA-MEL-PER for February dates, online Y booking, Freedom fares:

- immediate online upgrade with points for VA685 MEL-PER (2 pax - 19,800 points)
- waitlisted for upgrade VA 686 PER-MEL - upgrade confirmed at approx T60 (2 pax - 19,800 points)

I currently have six confirmed A330 J upgrades, all upgraded using points at the time of booking on Freedom fares. My new WP year starts next week so I will roll a few over to Comp J upgrades where J awards still exist. WP can cancel upgrades for no fee so they are quite flexible (unlike 'others').

If an upgrade is not available at the time of booking, I normally just get a Getaway/Elevate and register an UpgradeMe bid.

Status: Silver (+1 is Red; family pooling).

Booking made on Jan 4th for MEL - HTI - MEL, flying in late March. Booking made online, Getaway Economy X going up, Freedom coming back.

Similar to others I immediately upgraded online redeeming 19800 points for both of us on the homeward sector. Too easy.

Status Virgin Platinum.

Booked Darwin to Perth, cheapest fare $340x2 on 30 Jan for 5.Feb flight.

Upgrade to business bid $160 each. Advised successful 2 Feb.

Cheaper than full economy. But I suppose if they can suck an extra $320 out of you, they will!

Had two more successes this week, after booking a BNE/MEL/BNE (Freedom fare) day trip for 23 April, and noticing my FF account was very healthy, opted to upgrade using 17,500 points for each sector. Both upgraded immediately :D. Interesting to note that I was the only one in J at present on the BNE/MEL flight.

Flight: VA1 SYD-LAX VA2 LAX -SYD
Booking: 2 pax booked in Premium - cash sale
Waitlisted Upgrade Points: 45,000 Velocity points per person per sector - total 180,000 points
Confirmed: TBC, should know the outbound sector around 3 days before our 3 October departure and again for the return flight on 23 October

Note: will trip over into Plat status after the return flight. Not sure how the review process is monitored, so don't expect preference given to us for the return waitlist.

Flight - MEL-LAX 25/3/18
Points - 45,000
Confirmed - T-4 days

Booked economy on a freedom fare (obviously). Note that even though I went on the upgrade waitlist as soon soon as I booked the flight (4 weeks before flying) the upgrade didn't immediately process as soon as reward availability opened up. I had set up an expertflyer alert and went back into the booking as soon as the email came through and was able to upgrade immediately. Advice - keep checking availability even if you're waitlisted.

Flight: MEL/BNE 12/6/19
Points: 17,500
Confirmed: T-16 days

Booked Economy (Elevate fare) 16 days prior to flying and as soon as ticketed, rang up Call Centre (as booking done through Accelerate Portal, which means must call to arrange upgrades) and upgrade granted immediately.

Points: 30,000
Confirmed: T-1 hour

No contact prior to check-in at the PER kiosks which offered me cash upgrade for $325. Considered that too high so went up to Lounge to try my luck. Had another pax ahead of me doing ODU, also same flight so thought I might be fresh out of luck.

No, I got the lucky last seat (but was 4G, middle section [non-window] on A332). Wasn’t complaining as 30K points much better value and had to work anyway.

I have a similar flight to ADL for Nov. Do they entertain upgrade me with points requests for Velocity silver ? I haven't tried doing it online as I was too lazy.

Well done - did you check for business award availability on the flights before booking first, or was it just luck?

Sorry to be negative but wouldn’t it have been better value to just redeem points for a reward flight if the seats were available?
