Piece of cake and you'll have no trouble securing the seats. Emirates is usually wide open. There are so many airlines that you'll get your two seats no problem. But nothing you can really do for another 6 months or so.

Have you tried signing up for a free Award Nexus account and doing a search that way or if you are willing to post rough travel dates you might get lucky and an AFFer may do some poking around on expert flyer and post some suggestions

The QF site does not return all OW carriers.

I have never heard of Nexus, must google that. My dates...must be be in London be 30th October 2019, arrive Singapore 7th December 2019, fly home whenever, flexible.

Firstly, it is a word and secondly, I would spend the next 6 months learning as much as you can. I've been on this forum for more than 6 years and I still have trouble following the experts that freely and patiently offer their advice. It's just a whole different world to how the majority of us live but well worth the effort to try and understand

It’s complicated....I need a one way flight to London then I am cruising to Singapore from London, then I need a one way flight home. It is very hard to research this combo unless I just do separate one way flights. I was hoping to do multi city and I don’t care about economy on any other flights. I just want to sleep on the way to London. I am seriously losing sleep over this even though it’s 18 months away.

Alternatively you can just buy a cheap return to Singapore. Since you don't sleep 20 hours (I trust!) the return MEL-SIN can be day, then you get the FF redemption for a night flight from Singapore to London. Makes things much more affordable. But all depends what you want most.

You’d need at least 512,000 points for 2x return J (Business) seats on points from MEL/SYD to LHR and that’s flying QF or EK. If you want the flexibility to fly other carriers or fly F (First) if you can’t get J seats you’ll need more points again.

Though as you’re planning not to do 2x return due to your cruise you won’t need as many points this time.

It’s better to have more points than you need (leftovers for the next trip) than to not have enough.

The penny has just dropped, MEL_traveller suggested the same/ similar idea and I didn’t understand how that would help. I get it now, I hadn’t thought of buying Singapore return option and points from Singapore to London. Thanks

You may like to think about flying a lot more, and accumulate status credits. It is to those (higher status) frequent flyers the upgrades most often occur.
However you’re probably more likely to get success if you use points to purchase a J seat outright. You will soon know if you’re successful. This process may necessitate flexibility in your choice of travel dates.

It might also be useful to join in in a lot more discussion on this site to get a better understanding of how the world of points and status works.
You’re not alone however, many newbies turn up here looking for a silver bullet solution to their travel plans, only to discover that they should have been reading and planning 12 months ago.

I’d only do this if you don’t have enough points for the MEL-LHR flight. A one way from Singapore isn’t any more expensive than half a return generally.

I just plugged som random dates in the QF website for Feb 19. Outbound MEL-LHR, inbound SIN-MEL, for x2 PAX in J you would need 376K points with EK. As other have stated EK normally have good availability. If I was you I would book as outbound as soon as the flight become available then book inbound later. If you wait to do all at once you run the chance of missing out.

Thanks, yes the outbound is the more important flight for me, I will look out for that one first.
