Any advice on when qantas will issue frequent flyer flights to Tokyo in jan 2019? #qantasINfrequentflyer

They have issued “saver” fares but no reward flights?

It does appear to me that Qantas is blocking award space to Japan in January 2019. I can't really say if/when this might change. You might need to wait a few weeks until Japan Airlines releases award seats 330 days out.

I can see limited availability now via Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific.

Yes I can see the same. It is frustrating as other destinations in Japan do have saver and rewards flights.

Japan Airlines award availability is usually pretty good but they only release seats ~11 months (330 days) out and you can't find them online. So currently it's too early for your dates. You need to call Qantas to book these seats but you can check for availability on the British Airways website.

Checking my JMB acct they are up to 30/12/18 for international awards.

PS 1 award each class 26/12-30/12.
2 Y awards 27,28/12
2 PE awards each day except 29.
2 J on 30/12 only.

Thanks - Why would there be flights released for Osaka but not Tokyo?

These were JAL flights and they dont have a service to Osaka from AUST.So in 1 week the JAL flights for the 6th Jan should be released so be ready to jump.

Thanks that is very helpful. You think they will be released early next week?

Just putting my finance hat on for a moment; it is peak ski season, why would QF open up bulk award space when it can more then likely fill the planes with fully paid fares?

I understand this of course. I did get one last year. They need to maintain their brand. Once they stop offering reward flights the FF program will die

To get the JAL awrds you have to ring Qantas. You can open a JMB acct for free and so check when they are released.
From the JAL site award flights SYD-NRT on 6/2 should be released on 10/2.

School holidays and peak Japan snow season limits releases and they get snapped up quickly

But they are still offering reward flights, its just that for this route at that particular time of year they can fill the plane with paid fares so they release hardly any reward seats which would be at a lower margin to the group - smart business practise.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

From which Australian city are you departing?

8/9 Jan and return 20/21 Jan

There have been a lot of specials recently on QF to Japan for around AUD500.00 - AUD600.00 pp return however not sure whether that would have included January due to school holidays.

QF award tickets in economy are generally not great use of your points as you may well be spending have of a paid fare in taxes along never mind the fact that you are also burning points. Always look at the cost of buying the ticket as you could well do better saving your points for something else that will give you better value.

QF have award space on CX eg BNE/xHKG/KIX or NGO or CTS but not to NRT however you would need more points than if on QF ex AU direct to Japan eg 50,000 plus taxes AUD234.71 one way. I did a multi city request on the QF site for these two sectors however asking for a third sector NRT/SYD or NRT/OOL was too much for the QF website as I kept getting "empty request" or "generic error" responses.

Getting home around 20 Jan I couldn't see any paid flights available on the JQ site as it was saying "sold out" which I think may be the case as there is availability to other cities eg NRT/OOL for JPY42,460.00 one way (approx AUD492.00) which is the base fare before any add-ons like checked baggage or bundles.

If you did a paid fare OOL/NRT/OOL for 08-20 Jan the base fare is AUD1,045.14 before any addons plus you would still need to position to OOL. Nothing available for purchase SYD/NRT/SYD on JQ. QF have fares BNE/NRT/BNE and I'm sure ex SYD or MEL for approx AUD1,251.00 which inlcudes bagage, points, SC etc so no extras to pay eg positioning flights. A paid JQ fare round trip would be a false economy.
