Where does this stuff come from I wonder. Even if it was an engine failure, it could fly for many hours on one. The initial issue happened not all that far from Learmonth, which is a perfectly capable airport. Hopefully they haven't flown away from the closest one again.

For a very short period, the aircraft climbs to FL390, then, it starts to turn, and simultaneously starts losing altitude (which fits with an engine shutdown). But it continues to FL240, which is appreciably lower than needed, and then later to FL200.

I knew there was a reason I don't fly Air Asia.
Passengers reported the plane bumping up and and down like a washing machine - would this be normal in the event of an engine failure?

My God ... just saw the report on the TV news, and heard what the flight deck announced to the passengers after the start of the incident (and not just the bit about praying). Talk about not reassuring! If I heard that, coupled with that shaking, I'd be scared witless too.

Where does this stuff come from I wonder. <snip>.

It seems via the flight deck, in this case!

Just saw the vision on Channel 7. Very scary stuff. Reports the Captain told the PAX to pray.

If the report is true of the pilot asking the passengers to say a prayer I know what I would have been telling him / her to do from my seat . " get your mind wholly concentrated on flying and landing this plane "

Now heard on ABC news that offshore rescue resources were placed on stand-by in case of a ditching (interview with people concerned).

That shuddering makes for the scariest inflight footage I've seen! I wonder what was causing it if there was simply an engine failure?

And the captain suggesting that everyone's survival depends on the pax cooperation, that they should all pray and to brace for impact on landing is all very poor form. There's a few pax reports of FAs appearing very stressed too, which again, is the worst thing they should do.

#whyiflyqantas (or even just remotely reputable airlines)

The weather at Learmonth was good. The runway is long. And he flew away from it. I agree about the prayer....

That shaking is not something you expect from a shut down engine, and is bad.

Could that shaking be caused by the fan rotating after losing a blade? Bit like the shudder in a car when a wheel is unbalanced.

It's obviously shaking caused by out of balance rotation. There are lots of blades, in different stages of the engine, and they're all different sizes and weights. Throwing a fan blade is the least likely of the outcomes. If that's the case, it will be very interesting to see what the engine looks like.

If the rotation doesn't stop, you'll need to slow down as much as possible to reduce the air flow, and land as soon as possible.

As the FR24 trace momentarily has him at FL390 at the start of the event, you could infer that the failure occurred when climb thrust was applied for the step climb. That's a pretty likely time, but my guess would be internal blade(s), not the fan.

I didn't understand the height profile originally, but perhaps it makes more sense now. He's settled at FL240 for about 13 minutes, and then gone lower to FL200. He can fly slower there, and perhaps reduce the vibration. As I'd expect there would have been plenty of fuel the option to go even lower, and to take some flap possibly existed too. That would probably be outside controlled airspace, but who cares...

With that sort of shuddering was there any potential danger to the integrity of the aircraft? I guess I'm trying to understand why the aircraft didn't land sooner.

Must admit after that announcement and the shaking I would be needing a clean pair after finally landing :D :D
