The totally off-topic thread

I was just reading a recent TripA NYC post about that. The consensus was, $5 if you make a real mess, $2 if you tidy up after yourself. Some people were embarrassed that they didn't think to tip.

We always tip a min 20% (because in comparison to aussie service, Ive not had bad service in the US) but baggage, room cleaning, doorman, its a "whatever you feel" guide, which sucks. Just tell me so I dont piss off the person changing my towels and who has access to my electronics .

Always in restaurants/bars.

Hardly ever leave money in rooms. Hotels that have a "service fee" get nothing.

My biggest issue is having change. I pay for everything on credit card and have to get cash out specifically for tips.

I never checked the bill but all the time now check for a "compulsory service charge" as a few times I have tipped on top of a tip. Many place it is automatically added on for parties of 6 or more.

When you leave a tip on a credit card, how does the employer disperse that to the employee?

That night? The end of the week? When they get paid their usual weekly wage? How does an employee know its coming to them?

I leave cash for a service tip, figured it was easier for the employee.

Up to you of course but I don't think we should give our kids everything in life. It doesn't build resilience but an expectation that someone else will take care of them. It's what you do isn't it?
Something tells me my daughter deserves everything I have but I don't want to take a risk on her missing out on achieving what she can achieve.

My wish, more like a dream is that my daughter becomes a doctor and goes back to my wifes village and provide a free, or very low cost, medical service for the locals. Currenty they can go to the local hospital and wait hours and hours without being seen and returning home. My mother in law waited over 6 hours to get some medication for her chest infection. Private medical practice is almost non existent. Huge drain on public hospitals.

Ah we can dream right?

JohnK - Pretty sure your daughter would benefit most from your time and care (priceless) and not physical possessions and beating yourself up in the process.

I have seen on many occasions that the waiter takes a copy of it and adds it to their pile of "credit card" tips. I have also seen them cash out the tip on individual bills. No idea what the norm is, they are the only two things I have seen.

As shown by the scandals at 3* Michelin restaurants in the UK recently, in short many if not most don't distribute the tips or even service charges to the workers.

Go back to her mums village to provide free medical service. Why would you wish that on your kid? Why would you wish a scrabbling to stay above the poverty line, constantly asking, begging for support, funding, donations life on her?

Yes, join Doctors without Boarders and do your humanitarian service but not what youre hoping for her.

She won't be begging for anything. My daughter is extremely rich. She is actually richer than her father.

I want her to help those than can't help themselves. Apologies if that's not a good thing to wish.

You didnt exactly say Im going to gift my daughter a million dollar portfolio and wish her to do humanitarian work.

Being independently wealthy always allows people to choose to do what youre suggesting but for most, its not possible.

Spacebar

A few months ago I saw someone in a fire safety company vehicle throw a lit cigarette out of the window onto grass. I was furious.

For "bad" enough behaviour (eg. the <insert name of major manufacturer> truckie that hit my car on the freeway, then refused to pull over, then when i finally flagged him over, refused to give any details so I had to call the cops!) - a couple of days later I called the company HR department and advised them of employee's behaviour and how I thought it reflected badly on their company. Up to them what they do with it.

Do you have a dash cam? I think these days its a good investment and use the footage if the car has signage on social media.

But thats depending on what exactly happened, we all have stupid, dumb days sometimes but for flat out refusing to give you details after hitting you - name and shame.

Not to mention illegal.
