A great offer for the top Amex card (excluding the Centurion of course).

By applying using a referral link you will earn 110,000 Ascent Premium if you apply by 1 May 2017, are approved for an American Express® Platinum Card and spend $1,500 in first 3 months of Card Membership and I will receive 20,000.

The Amex Platinum Charge card is a great card for people who travel, with all the status perks, travel credits and lounge access.

Amex are so far ahead of everyone else at the moment. Great Sign on Bonuses, Great points earn, Statement Credits, Local Champion, Retention offers, Referral bonuses.

Here is a tip to anyone signing up for this card to derive even more value from the card. If you find this useful I'd very much appreciate you using my referral link.

This card comes with 4 free supplementary cards and It is possible to add yourself as a supplementary card holder, I just did this with Amex. When you add yourself as a supplementary card holder it is called an "Account Card" or "A/C" card. I did this with my initials rather than full name to tell the cards apart. There are people on AFF who have had all 4 free supplementary's issued in their own name!

Why would you do this?

1. When I called up to add myself as my first of 4 free supplementary card holder I asked if they were still offering the 5,000 bonus points for adding an additional card holder. The lady went off and checked and said no the promotion has finished, however we can add the points to your account anyway. These points have already been added to my account and I haven't even used the card yet. The points were noted as "Service Complaint points adjustment", I didn't complain just asked!
2. One of the best things about Amex at the moment is their Statement Credit offers. I have saved a couple of thousand dollars from the cashbacks this year. Shop small, Harvey Norman, HCF, David Jones, Langtons, Westfield and Myer to name a few. Never hurts to have as many Supplementary cards as possible especially in your own name especially when this card comes with 4 free supplementary's.
3. The reason behind an A/C card is you set up all your direct debits on this card and then keep it safe at home somewhere separate from your other card/wallet. Then if you lose your wallet you don't need to change over all of your direct debits.

With the accompanying Platinum Reserve card which comes fee free with the Platinum Charge Card, you get another 4 free supplementary cards, so potentially 10 Amex cards all up. The Reserve companion card pools its points to Ascent rather than Ascent Premium Membership Rewards Program, but is often automatically linked to the Ascent Premium account of the Platinum Charge. If it isn't automatically linked you can call Amex to have the accounts linked. Also note that sometimes Amex make you apply separately for the Reserve Account (they did to me, but not a friend). So it was another hit on my Veda file.

There are some great tips on this site on how to get the most out of this card, make sure you subscribe to these threads:

Amex Statement Credits have saved me thousands this year.
http://www.australianfrequentflyer.c...62256-291.html (New [Amex] statement credits)

For when your annual fee is approaching call and ask them "What have you done for me lately?" I got 84,000 points to keep this card and an additional 84,000 on my American Express Platinum Edge.
http://www.australianfrequentflyer.c...-71493-11.html (Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.)

The Amex Platinum Charge with its Ascent Premium Membership Rewards points has become even more valuable with the addition of the Amex Explorer card (my referral link for this card is in the appropriate thread). When combined and points pooled to the Ascent program the Explorer card earns 2 airline points per $.

Hope everyone is able to get some value from the above. Any queries please let me know. Love this site, love this card!

AMEX has upped the offering on the Platinum Charge Card again, this time to, 110,000 sign-on bonus points. This new offer now expires on the 4th May 2017.

If you are thinking about applying for this card I'd certainly recommend jumping in now - the 110k bonus points is a massive bonus and is in excess of what AMEX have offered in the last couple of rounds of offers.

Whilst the 110k bonus points might sound fantastic, and it does to me, there is a catch and it's relatively large - the card comes with a $1200 annual fee. Now I'm normally not much into paying annual fees for credit cards (with the AMEX Edge and this card excluded), so how did I justify such a large fee - well here's how:

  • 110,000 Membership Rewards points – pretty simple really – based on my numbers I value this at $3000-$4000 (annual fee covered right there!) – a little more on this later.
  • Points can be transferred to massive variety of partners – Qantas FF, Virgin Velocity, Kris Flyer and Cathy Pacific Asia Miles and some more valuable ones via SPG (AAdvantage, BA Executive Club & Alaska Miles etc) – no other (non-invite only) Australian Credit Card can boast this!
  • $300 Annual Travel Credit with American Express Travel – value $300 (clearly)
  • The option for an additional $400 annual Travel Credit if you apply for a FREE Platinum Reserve companion card – you’ll need to ring AMEX after approval to arrange an application for this (value to me $400+)
  • Unlimited Virgin Australia / Priority Pass / AMEX & Delta Lounge Access – a bit more subjective but, I value it at around $250 – I’m not big on paying for lounge access so it is hard for me to value, but the Virgin Australia domestic lounge access kind of speaks for itself (they are really good these days!) and once outside Australia Priority Pass have a lounge network that is hard to surpass! If you value lounge access more than me this benefit could easily be worth $500+++
  • Access to AMEX Cash Backs and Small Shop Offers – I wasn’t even aware of this benefits until the last couple of years - and boy was I missing it previously!! The total value of AMEX statement credits and Shop Offers last year, for me, was $1500. That is some pretty epic value! AFF has a really good thread covering the offers here: AMEX Statement Credits.
  • NRMA style roadside assistancevalue about $90 (hopefully you or I never need this one!!)
A Quick Card Summary:

  • 110,000 Membership Rewards bonus points after spending $1500 in first two months after card activation
  • A $300 Platinum Travel Credit each year, can be redeemed online for airfares, car hire and hotel bookings – I’ve done it and it was really simple
  • Complimentary access to more than 800 airport lounges in 100 countries, including Virgin Australia Lounges, Priority Pass, Delta Skymiles and American Express Lounges
  • Dedicated Platinum Concierge Service to take care of travel plans, tickets or dinner reservations
  • Earn up to 3 Membership Reward points per dollar – I should mention I value MR points at 2.5-.3.5c/point
  • Transfer your points to a choice of 10 airline rewards programs:
    • Qantas Frequent Flyer, Virgin Australia Velocity Frequent Flyer, Emirates Skywards, Etihad Guest, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Air New Zealand Airpoints, THAI Royal Orchid Plus, Malaysia Airlines Enrich and Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
    • And the best bit, transfers to AAdvantage, BA Executive Club & Alaska Miles, amongst others are possible through SPG (Starwood Preferred Guest)
  • Transfer your points to leading hotel programs: Hilton HHonors, Priority Club Rewards, Starwood Preferred Guest
  • Complimentary enrolment into elite tier of hotel partner programs including Club Carlson, Starwood Preferred, Hilton Honors.
  • Complimentary worldwide Travel Insurance and Purchase Protection Insurance
  • Great savings on First and Business Class fares with some of the worlds leading airlines through the AMEX Platinum Airline Privileges program
So as you see you can really get some value out of this card, especially with the current sign-on bonus. How to value the current AMEX offer, always a challenging task, but I will give it a go. Whilst putting a value on reward points is always very subjective, I personally value AMEX membership reward points at 2.5-3.5c/point. Based on this, the bonus points from the current offer are worth $3000-$4000. Perhaps a less subjective way is to provide some basic concrete examples, the 110k points redeemed for Virgin Australia economy SYD-MEL flights is worth $2500 – not a bad deal, but this is probably a really poor use of these points. Better value would be flying Business return SYD-LAX on Qantas by redeeming the points through Cathy Pacific Asia Miles – Qantas charge $7000+ for this flight!!! Of course for supreme value you could try your luck at a Singapore Airlines Suite – using AMEX points is the only way I’m ever seeing the inside of one of those!!! :)

If you add in all the other benefits in too, the total value of this offer to me is in the order of $4600-$5600!! Not a bad deal at all in my mind!!

As I started off with, if you’d like to apply for the Platinum Charge Card I'd really recommend you get on it quickly, before the current sign-on bonus expires. Any referral link from this forum, or elsewhere, should do the trick, but make sure the AMEX page that loads explicitly says 110,000 points (not the 100,000 point offer available to the general public). I always recommend printing a PDF copy of the page before beginning the process in case there are any problems later - that way you always have a record! If you'd like to use my Referral link is HERE, my sincere thanks and good luck to anyone applying! I'm happy to take questions via PM too on this card (or anything else), no obligations whatsoever.

Footnote:
Here, here and here are three articles I've found helpful, the first two are on the predicted impacts of the recent RBA interchange reforms and the last is the list of card providers that reduced the points earn on their cards in 2016/2017! All three make interesting reading and if you need convincing as to why you should get a AMEX issued AMEX card, you probably won't after reading these! As you can see these reforms are already having a big impact on the card market place!

PS - Whilst applying for new credit cards offers great value (and can even be addictive), please only apply for a card you can afford! No sign-on bonus, no matter how big, is worth a lifetime of debt.
PPS - AMEX also off the refree (myself, if you choose to use my link) 20k bonus points for anyone that signs-up using a referral link

My referral link below if anyone would like to use it.

Apart from what others have mentioned is if you have other Amex cards linked up to your Ascent Premium account your earn on those can count towards this as well.

As an example I have the Explorer linked to my
Ascent Premium account, this means that I am able to earn 2 points for dollar on most spend and the points go directly into Ascent Premium.

Wow - I logged in this morning and found that there is a bonus on referrals at the minute.

If you refer friends to this card prior to 1 May 2017, the applicant gets the same bonus of 110,000, but the referrer gets an extra 20,000 over and above the usual 20,000 points (so a total of 40,000 membership premium points!)

This could prove particularly beneficial for couples wishing to refer on another, as you could pick up some bonus points during this promo! The extra 20,000 Membership Rewards points is another category of hotel if redeeming a Marriott Flights & Nights 7 night offer (which includes airline miles & a 7 night stay in a Marriott Property)

I'll post my link here if you'd be so kind to use it if you find my posts informative and helpful in making your travel plans :)

You will receive 110,000 Membership Rewards points if you apply by 1 May 2017, are approved for an American Express® Platinum Card and spend $1,500 in their first 3 months of Card Membership. The referrer (me) gets 40,000 Membership Rewards points out of this.

You may say $1200 annual fee is a bit step but when you break it down:

* 110,000 MR points has a nominal value of $1100 straight up (based on OzBargain selling price of points or perhaps even higher, depending on your valuation) - 80k points will net you a CX SYD-HKG return tix that's normally retail for over $6k.
* Complimentary Reserve Credit Card that's valued at $400
* $300 Travel Credit + $400 when you sign up for the complimentary Reserve Credit Card = $700 travel credit
* 2x Priority Pass - one for yourself and another for a supplementary cardholder which is worth $399 USD per person
* Roadside assistance for you and your supplementary cardholders - $99 per car that you and/or your sup cardholders own (Protip: it has to be 8 years old or younger based on calendar year AND the car in trouble cannot be at your principle place of residence...I got caught out recently)
* Travel Insurance - no idea how to value this but it's a few hundreds no doubt. Have made various claims over the years (both with ACE and Chubb more recently) and it's a painless process.
* Home assistance - can't put a value on it but something happened to my home, my el cheapo building insurance doesn't have a 24/7 assistance line so these guys organized plumbers and electricians on my behalf AND paid for the call out/first 30 minutes labour full stop.

Without putting in too much effort, that's already $3200 value! Even better value when you get yourself an A/C Card (additional card) and 4 other supplementary cardholders to maximize your coverage on Amex offers such as Shop Small and various other promotions.

It will be greatly appreciated if you can use my referral link for sign up - any points will be going towards my 4x RTW J tix for my family.

I all, as everyone else has said above, this card has a great sign on bonus of 110,000 membership points and I get 40,000 points if you use my referral link. The card also comes with a $300 travel credit. Would be great if you could use my link so I can treat my Mum on an overseas holiday :) Thanks

Just received my pack with a bunch of physical referral cards and didn't realise it was back up to 110k on referral.

If anyone would be so kind to use my referral link it would very much help fund our impending honey moon - the points I accumulated via this card have been used on a trip that we are now 5 days away from (where I will be proposing).

What you get has been outlined in depth in the other posts, 100,000 MR points + 10,000 MR points (referral bonus) and I will receive 40,000 for the referral - you also receive $300 travel credit to use as part of the card.

Probably worth mentioning that the concierge service once you build a bit of rapport is pretty reasonable (e.g. we have secured multiple Michelin starred restaurants in the notorious to book Japanese dining scene). Also, managed to get a kitchen tour secured at Bennelong for my mum's birthday.

This is a great card to add to your Amex collection. If you sign up using my referral not only will you get 110k points but you'll also be gifting me 40k points which will go to good use.

Some perks from this card that I have utilised that you may find useful are:
-Priority Pass with unlimited access for you and a guest. You are allowed two cards which means a total of 4 people can enjoy lounge passes when they're travelling with you
-Elite gold status in Hilton Hotel, Sheraton, Shangri-La and Club Carlson. This will get you complimentary breakfast, upgrades (if available) and late check-out.
-Complimentary travel insurance and roadside assist for that added peace of mind.

There's a wealth of other benefit to unlock with this card such as: cashback offers, local champion (turbo boost your points) and your own personal travelling concierge.

The world is your oyster with this card. http://amex.com.au/refer/tuant7VVR

With Singapore Airlines new award chart taking place (which increased the points required, but eliminated the fuel surcharge on award flights which saves hundreds of dollars in cost on award flight), a valuable alternate use for Ascent Premium MR Points has presented itself today getting to/from Europe in Economy, whereas previously the taxes and fuel surcharges prevented this from being a viable option.

106,000 Ascent Premium MR Points = 106,000 KrisFlyer Miles

Melbourne to Paris return in Economy via Singapore = 106,000 Krisflyer Miles + $187.29 AUD (I selected two random dates - depart 26/4/17 returning 23/5/17)

Total cost of flight if using this card = $1200 (Annual Fee of this card) + $187.29 = $1,387.29

Saver Fare with singaporeair.com = $1,517.89 + 1.35% credit card surcharge = $1,538.18

Direct cash savings if booking with points vs booking and paying directly = $150.89, even when paying the $1200 annual fee

On top of this $150 saving, you've got access to:

  • $300 travel credit with the Platinum Charge card
  • $400 travel credit with the companion Platinum Reserve Card once you apply for it
  • Priority Pass with unlimited lounge entries at participating airports (which you can use to guest 1 person in), plus a supplementary cardholder can get their own priority pass and guest 1 person it (so total of 4 people can gain access in the one visit)
  • Insurances - Roadside/Travel/Rental Car

So working out the value proposition for this card is quite easy if looking at booking a return economy trip, particularly on short notice with a full service airline with minimal transits. You dont have to travel at the pointy end to get a good deal on this card :)

Mrs tizey would be thankful if you found this post useful to obtain the required 110,000 Referal bonus (100K + 10K bonus), and used her link which gives her 40,000 points for referring you :)

So, I have a bit of a love hate relationship going on with this card. I love the benefits (such as unlimited lounge access) and high points earn, but I hate the annual fee. Whilst I'd recommend the AMEX Platnium Edge card to everyone, you need to work out if this card is value for you. On the plus side the current bonus points offer is easily worth $2200+:

REFERRAL LINK - 110000 bonus points - gives you a lot of points to like! At least for the first year!

As I said this card isn’t' for everyone. My grandparents would faint (actually add my parents to that list too) if they knew I paid a $1200 annual fee for a credit card. Grandpa still uses a passbook bank account :). The AMEX Charge Card is great for those with reasonable disposable incomes that spend a good portion of that eating out, drinking at bars or on travel. In addition, the lounge access is great for those who fly a lot, but perhaps don't always have airline lounge access (either through the ticket class or status).

I've had this card for a few years now, after applying through a AFF referral link. During this time the most valuable benefits I've used from this card would have to be:

1. Unlimited Lounge Access! Free drinks are on AMEX!!! My partner and I have made great use of the unlimited Virgin Australia Domestic, Priority Pass (World-wide) and AMEX (World-wide) lounge access. There is also unlimited access to Delta lounges, we just haven't used it. For domestic trips, we almost always travel in economy and if we're flying Virgin (which is most of the time), this gives unlimited lounge access. He can also access the lounges even if he is travelling by himself. The Priority Pass and AMEX lounge access has been brilliant for when we've been travelling overseas. Although with limited Priority Pass Lounges in Oz you need to depart through Sydney, where the superb AMEX lounge is, to take maximum advantage on the outbound legs.
2. Drinking and dining on the ground is rewarded with more of the same at the pointy end of the plane! :). Or more simply, when we eat out at restaurants or enjoy a tipple at a bar we earn 3 points per dollar, using this card, which can build your points up surprisingly quickly (perhaps I need to budget better - smashed Avo anyone!! :)).
3. $300 annual travel credit. The Platnium Charge card includes a $300 annual travel credit that can be used to book flights, hotels, hire cars etc via the AMEX travel website. Essentially this is a $300 discount on the annual fee. We get an additional $400 annual travel credit, by holding the free companion AMEX reserve credit card (for a total discount of $700 off our annual fee). This card isn't advertised anywhere, you need to call AMEX to get the application form - or grab it from here.
4. Heaps of transfer partners. I've used Asia Miles for booking cheap domestic and international awards on Qantas and other OneWorld Carriers. Etihad and Velocity, mainly to supplement my transfers from FlyBuys to book Oz domestic flights. I've transferred to Qantas - against my better judgement (transferring to Qantas is a benefit only available to Platnium Charge holders and above). Between Qantas, Asia Miles, Etihad, Velocity, Singapore Airlines Kris Flyer and Starwood Preferred Guest (for more unusual transfer partners like American Airlines or BA), AMEX Membership Rewards Premium (the rewards program that comes with the AMEX Platnium Charge Card) is the ultimate in Australian points pooling systems.
5. Supplementary cards. My partner has a supplementary card on my account, which gives him unlimited lounge access, even if he is flying on his own. Our additional supplementary cards (one each), called Account Cards (or A/C cards) give us two additional cards (four in total) to take advantage of AMEX Small Shop or the twice weekly statement credit offers (this saves us a serious amount of money each year!).

As I said at the start, I have a love hate relationship with the AMEX Platnium Charge Card. At the moment love outweighs the hate. The $1200 annual fee is my hate, but I've done the maths and we more than cover the annual fee in additional points (and other value) each year. If my partner and I end up having kids, I'm sure our lifestyle will change and I reckon I'll close this card and put all of our spending through the Edge card instead (at least while the kids are little). Until then, this card remains a mainstay for maximising points earning on our disposable income spend.

The current AMEX referral bonus is the best AMEX has offered in quite a while. If you apply before 4th May 2017 you'll get 110000 AMEX bonus points. If you'd like to use my Referral Link I'll get 20k bonus points (40k for the next few weeks) and you'll get 110k points if you are approved and meet the minimum spend of $1500 in the first two months from card activation. For anyone generous enough to use my link, I'll certainly put the referral points to good use - my partner and I are planning a trip for next summer and still need a few points before we can book.

Just an update Amex have increase the referral bonus on the Platinum Charge Card so I would earn 30k points rather than 20k points. Everything else remains the same as below.

A great offer for the top Amex card (excluding the Centurion of course).

http://amex.com.au/refer/jameshyHTj

By applying using a referral link you will earn 110,000 Ascent Premium if you apply by 1 May 2017, are approved for an American Express® Platinum Card and spend $1,500 in first 3 months of Card Membership and I will receive 20,000.
