this is also how I read it also,

Flight Segment A Flight Segment is travel on the same flight number between originating and destination airports as shown on your E-Ticket or Itinerary. For example, travel from Adelaide to Los Angeles with a change of flight number in Sydney would earn on both the Adelaide to Sydney and Sydney to Los Angeles Flight Segments.
Whenever your flight number changes during your trip, it will be counted as a different Flight Segment. Total earn is the sum of each Flight Segment.

Yes, this is absolutely correct.

There becomes an issue if you, for example, flew QF1 SYD-LHR, which stops in DXB - many would consider that 2 segments, but it's only 1 in relation to this. If you flew QF1 SYD-DXB then connected to QF9 DXB-LHR, you'd have 2.

Anyway I'm not sure you're asking a question here just clarifying the situation?

yes just stating what's in writing on qantas.com. a previous poster stated it doesn't include the return flight but it seems this info is incorrect

To be clear, eligible travel is for a flight segment with a QF or Jetstar flight number where points/SC's are earned. Being a return, one-way or multi segment booking is not directly relevant. What is relevant is the number of eligible segments in a booking.

A return booking would have at least two flight segments.

You may have a return booking for travel between Melbourne and Singapore. If both ways are traveled on an eligible single flight number with a QF flight number (e.g. MEL-(1)-SIN and SIN-(2)-MEL) then that represents travel for two of the four needed segments.

If, however, the travel is via Sydney on the return (e.g. MEL-(1)-SIN and SIN-(2)-SYD-(3)-MEL) then there are three of the needed segments.

So if you're wanting to level up to a higher tier asap it's best to plan to get the 4 segments ASAP. A bit late for this time, but if there is a next time you can plan for this.

As you're based in SYD a trip via MEL/BNE both ways all on QF (or changing from QF1 to QF9 and QF10 to QF2 in DXB if visiting LHR) would have been a bit inconvenient perhaps, but it would have got you the 4 sectors you needed to level up.

Obviously with retaining status there is no rush to get the 4 sectors. You just need to do the qualifying sectors and get the required SCs before your membership year expires.

It appears that you misunderstood what was said in that post. Your previous post suggested that a "return flight" would always count as 2 flights towards the 4 required.

The following "return flights" are all options for SYD-TYO:
QF25 (SYD-HND) JL771 (NRT-SYD) - counts as 1 of 4 required flights towards status earn/renewal
QF25 (SYD-HND) QF26 (HND-SYD) - counts as 2
QF25 (SYD-HND) QF62 (NRT-BNE) QF509 (BNE-SYD) - counts as 3
QF5 (SYD-SIN) QF4017 (SIN-HND) QF4018 (HND-SIN) QF6 (SIN-SYD) - counts as 4
- QF4017 and QF4018 are codeshares on JL. If the same flights were booked under the operating JL codes (JL38 and JL37) it would only count as 2 though you would still earn points and status credits as JL is in oneworld.

I thought I had this worked out already, but for those who need more clarification,

flight on QF3 & QF4 I received 2 journey credits
my next flight QF5 & QF6 should give a total of 4 which is required to move up to the next membership tier.

Yes!

These flights are shown with a stylised ~ on your online QFF activity display.

Two more and you are on your way. .. :D

You need the 4~ each year to attain/retain status (except in the case of lifetime status)

Of course, 99.9% of folks retaining status will do the 4~ as part of that earn, but you still require them each membership year.

This is absolutely my understanding of the system.

Yes, but with retaining status it doesn't matter if you get the segments done early in the year or later in the year, so long as they are done within the membership year you're fine. However with levelling up to a higher status tier you need the segments done to be able to level up ASAP. 600SC and 2 qualifying segments would mean you need to get 2 QF/JQ segments to gain PS (silver). Whereas if you had gained SG (Gold) already in the previous year you'd be enjoying the Gold benefits already and just need 2 segments anytime before the end of the membership year to retain Gold status.

OK I see what you mean now :) thanks for clarifying

Hi

QF3/QF4 - J fare SYD - HNL - SYD yeilds 320 status credits and 2 segments - under DSC, you got 640
QF5/QF6 - J far SYD - SIN - SYD yeilds 240 status credit and 2 segments

congrats, thats gold status, and as you fly J anyway, your real benefit would be the 75% more Qantas Points per flight over the standard points.

cheers
