Looking at Premium Economy flights to NY in December 2017 and thinking of budget now. Looks like pricing is currently AUD 4800, which is not that cheap. Has anyone seen PE flights go much lower? Alternatively any suggestions on business class for not that much more than 4800.

Thanks!

I have seen QF premium economy cheaper than that when on sale, but if you're going to be travelling around Christmas then the chances of getting a good sale fare are probably pretty low.

Have you had a look at Air New Zealand premium economy pricing? (Air NZ don't fly to New York, but they do fly to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Houston, and they also partner with United for the onward connections.)

And if you don't mind stopping in Fiji, have a look for Fiji Airways business class fares from Nadi to New York.

I'm not even sure flights have been loaded yet - certainly not the specials. But looking at december this year China Southern is just $5500. $350 each way more than QF PE and you get full flat beds the whole way. Journey time exSYD is 26 hours (including transit in CAN) vs 22 hours with QF (stop in LAX). On board food isn't going to win any awards with China Southern, but you have to weigh that up against comfort.

I'd expect similar fares next year, unless you take advantage of some of the sales during the year.

Again for december this year - finnair has business class BKK-HEL-JFK for AUD3470 return. Add your choice of airline (separate paid ticket) to get from Australia to Bangkok in economy.

Wait for a sale to come up. We booked Qantas PE - Perth to NY (with stopover in LAX) for $3500. Tickets booked 25/1/16 for travel 11/12/16.

I saw J fares for this Christmas on sale for around $4k not long ago so it can happen. I'd be waiting a bit.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

J fares at $4000 seems incredibly low. At present the Chinese carriers are all around 5 to 6K for random dates next year. Air Canada came up with some low fares via Vancouver of around 6K business too.

AA currently have sale up to 100K bonus miles. I'd check award availability on various sites, put flights on hold if finding the wanted dates and buying miles.
