Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Totally with you on that one, BlackCat20. As a premium member of (I don't know what now, as IB and GS each send me member emails), I am a little confused. That'll be my fault for not following the announcements that closely. I'm guessing the Mea Culpa of the Tarraford Vineyard will be re-branded to a Giant Steps wine for post-sale vintages. Is that right?

I assume so, its a little unclear. They have now introduced multi-vinyard wines, but the price point is much lower than the old Mea Culpa. I figure Brown Bros has taken all the IB labels, and Giant Steps has kept everything else...

And so it begins... EK lounge BNE. Nice wines tried so far...

Chablis and SV were very nice. Reds also..

both medium to full body wines, well balanced with a long finish. The cab Merlot is a step above a quaffer in my book, and the Pinot is one of the better Pinots I have had, a velvety mouth feel, earthy with dark fruits and powdery (?) tannin - oh happy days, oh happy days when.....

TMA, what is your itinery here, and I assume first class. You're not dropping into for a bowl of Tom Yum with the new dad and his daughter are you?

Incidentally, EK 435 was chockers. Oversold in Y and J. F was full of refugees from J. ( We're on a QF FF 320K F award booking.)

Oh and breakfast in EK F lounge DXB of boiled eggs and "marmite soldiers" with yummy veal bacon!

Aplogies for the mess.

Was impressed by this Coal Valley Pinot during a recent wine tour. The winery sells it for $50, CellarMasters for $40 (pack of 6) but with recent AMEX offer, Cashrewards and some discount codes total price comes down to $25, very good value IMO.

Dry Dubai has got off to a flying start as I snuck in:

Dubai isn't too bad. Plenty of places to buy alcohol (of varying quality), just you pay through the nose.

Glad you took some "BYO". Certainly no problem with doing so and consuming it in the confines of your hotel. Other parts of the ME are less liberal.

A few tasted;

IMG_0116_small.jpgIMG_0118_small.jpgIMG_0120_small.jpgIMG_0149_small.jpg

Balnaves The Tally Reserve 2007: The nose is great, with cassis and redcurrant fruit and savoury spice. The taste is still dominated by grippy tannins. However the fruit core and acid are both good IMHO and it will interesting to see how this develops over the next 3-5 years. CT91

Hutton Vale Farm Shiraz 2012: A big 98 points from Halliday. At this stage, intensely brooding, with a tight nose of blue and dark fruits and something resembling primary school glue. The palate very smooth and awash with fruit balanced with oak, spice and tannins. This is a big SA wine, but already elegant. Will be interesting to see how this evolves. CT90

Wynns Alex 88 Vineyard Cabernet 2010: Good Coonawarra cab from a great vintage. Classic blackcurrant and mint with dark chocolate and some oak. Tannins are still firm. It's nice now, but hopefully a few more years will see it come together in a more coherent fashion. CT91

Katnook Estate Prodigy Shiraz 2005 (bottle 4717): Oak, dark fruit and smokey notes on the nose. The palate has dark cherries, plums, blackcurrants with good tannins in support of the whole thing, and a lingering finish. Nice. CT92

All these great wines and all I noticed was the mitolo cork in the background.
Geez, one of these wines I believe was hard done by.............with your scoring system anyway.
Nice reviews none the less. Keep it up.

Not sure what you mean by hard done by? Unless you think that 92 isn't a good score?

Dinner at our house with restaurant friends (they have a French provincial-bistro place), they provided the plonk, I've snuck in a bottle of Adelaide Hills Graves Gate (very medium bodied and really only OK'ish in my notoriously hard to please fashion), 'twas a nice night....

This thread is in honour of JessicaTam who encouraged me to start it.

This evening Mrs Buzzard & I enjoyed a Draytons Bellevue 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon.
Not strictly a Hunter Cab Sav as the grapes are sourced from "....vineyards around Australia."
I only paid about $8 for this bottle as it was part of a Cellarmasters package. Given the price the wine is smooth, fruity, easy drinking and generally not offensive. Went down a treat with a medium rare T Bone off the barby.
The bottle claims to contain "8 standard drinks" but we only got 6 out of it. Feel ripped off I do. Maybe I should lower our standard :D

Hopefully other AFFers will share some wines on this thread and keep it going for a while. Maybe this will encourage us all to try something different.

Tomorrow is the release of the amazing Langtons Classified "Outstanding" 2012 PETER LEHMANN Stonewell Shiraz from Barossa !

I polished off a bottle of Chateau d'Yquem all by myself recently. The lovely FA said I was the only one drinking it, and it'd be an awful shame to let it go to waste.

(she was also topping up my other glass of the absolutely delightful Chateau Montrose at the same time)

Next EK First flight is in just over 2 weeks from DXB-CDG. I'm looking forward to it more than the QF First flight from SYD-DXB immediately before it.

what do you guys think?

At $75/bot you have lots of options. Are you into Barossa Shiraz? If so, the Stonewell's usually a good buy.

Who's this offer through?
