Qantas treats Perth like dirt

Lucky islanders! Perhaps we won't have to sell you to NZ to balance the budget after all.

More seriously, I realise it is still possible to search for, find and book fares and even sale fares from Perth, to most destinations.
But you can't find them through the promotional pages for sales and you can't get alerts for cheap or sale fares through the Qantas app.
So a determined traveller will find what they want. I have already booked business flights from PER-NOU return this month for exceptionally good value.
But that was as a result of persistent monitoring of the fares - the fare alert for PER-NOU which I have set up in the Qantas iOS app has never sent me a notification.
Unlike the alert for PER-ADL which has been going off like a cat in a cake box for the past few days.
So really it is Qantas missing out by not marketing these specials to potential PAX from PER.
The point of a sale is to attract PAX who would not otherwise fly, or fly with you.
Not to offer cheaper fares to PAX who are already so committed to flying with you that they are making dummy bookings to check the fares on a daily basis.
 Oops I mean occasionally checking the fares. I'm not obsessive. Honestly.

I would maybe set an alert for BNE/NOU or SYD/NOU then when you get a cat in a cakebox type hit compare those fares to PER/NOU and work out whether it's cheaper to buy the fare ex PER vs a positioning sale or award flight ex PER to/from the Eastern States.

I would think the demand for fares PER/NOU would be extremely low due to Asian destinations being a lot closer, airfares cheaper and the cost of meals and ground arrangements once there more affordable than visiting destinations in the Pacific.

Well, goodness help those of us on the island. Compared to PER, I think the income derived from Devonport would be rather slim. Yet,, due to the graciousness of some-one, we can book QF flights on the website from Devonport and even the odd sale fare ...

Yeah, forget Perth, there is a whole state with 'average' service.

I would have thought PER-NZ biz fares at only $500 is pretty good value given the additional distance.

Agree they should be offering Europe options, presumably via either direct EK codeshares or via SIN, but maybe not part of EK arrangement??

Eg. It is near impossible to book SYD-KUL via the EK flight from MEL

You can book flights from Perth to Europe on EK codeshares they just aren't included in sales.

Further to my post and subsequent by OP it would seem that many sale fares don't relate to origination from Perth, but may come up if you look for fares from Perth in general, as I did when I first posted. The EK codeshare fares may just not be on sale at all.

You can not fly Qantas to Johannesburg unless you want to fly for 23 hours stopping in Sydney and Melbourne, a direct flight with SA is less than 10 hours.

Aside from the website, I have to agree with the OP, but for different reasons!

How about:
- flights often not departing on time
- worst planes in the QF fleet
- despite longest segments, often has only QStreaming and sometimes not even that!
- often having to walk the tarmac instead of aerobridge (what IS with that!?)
- limited int'l flights and corresponding opening hours (closed hours!) of int'l lounge

Ah, PER.... gotta love it!

So???? I really don't get this 'logic' by some who think Qantas MUST fly from THEIR port to ANY other port they desire:D because apparently Qantas should, regardless of the fact that Qantas is a business, not a charity . (on the flip side, I guess people who live in South Africa are whinging that SAA ONLY fly JNB to PER and don't fly from CPT, or every other South African airport direct to PER

Whilst the solution is simple, why do you need to stop in Melbourne? Surely you can connect direct of 568?

Exactly, There are non-stop flights between Perth and Sydney.

Yep - was there, did that, on Saturday night SYD-PER on a 737. Told about streaming as we boarded, too late. Headwinds as usual and landed late. Despite that, they still didn't have stairs ready until 10 minutes after we arrived. When finally allowed off, the heavens opened.

Are you suggesting QF should service all cities o/s they fly to from all Australian cities?

I would agree that QF would be crazy to attempt to fly direct to a lot of o/s markets from some Aussie capital cities. OTOH, I think it is reasonable for PER based flyers to have some direct o/s destinations (which at one point we did not). This is aggravated by the additional 5+ hours to connect in eastern Australia for many destinations. JNB SIN and HKG come to mind.

Now that QF management have an income statement more to their liking, it remains to be seen whether PER will get QF metal to DXB (along with an additional QF metal destination in Europe) and the occasional wide body to SE Asia. As for PER-LHR, hopefully the PER airport upgrades will be finished in time to not be a hindrance on that account. But I suspect that I and many others would prefer a stopover somewhere along the route when headed west - and DXB fails in that respect. Call me a miser but I stay in hotels mostly at under AU$100/night - it helps pay for air fares.

Happy wandering

Fred

Valid point. However I think the annoying thing about JNB is that the you have to fly to Sydney then fly back, almost watching Perth slide by out the window as you take 5 hours to cover ground you just spent 4 hours flying over in the opposite direction. It's one route where I think it would make sense to make everyone else connect to a direct flight from PER. Perth would then be a sort of west coast mini-hub. Obviously a million people will disagree, as, evidently, does Qantas.

I thought the frequent walks over the tarmac would stop when QF took over T4 from VA.
They acquired a whole heap of gates with aerobridges, even a few gates with dual aerobridges to suit the A330s.
Yet on arrival from ADL on Sunday I was treated to a tarmac workout again.
Very difficult to understand in the context of the terminal acquisition.

Yes we try to get into the Perth business lounge more than 10 times a year. We don't have Qantas flying internationally to anywhere we want to go so we go with SQ for Europe and the US.

Do.. or Do Not. There is no Try

:D

re JNB - QF used to codeshare on the SA service PER-JNB but that was dropped some time back when SAA finally give QF the flick (or maybe the other way around) but given competing alliances it always did seem a bit odd.

Still QF didn't look for another option probably says much for the booking patterns.

And remember it's rumoured that PER-LHR is under consideration for the 789.. if that got the nod would PER still be "treated like dirt?"

I would also suggest the IT work experience kids need to fix the website flaw which is clearly a bug, not an intentional move by QF.

IMHO.

If they did start the direct PER<->LHR service I would cease my complaining forthwith.
I hope the website "flaw" is indeed a flaw. However I suspect it has something to do with all flights to Europe from PER being on EK metal.

As a side note if the AFF abbreviation database is bieng expanded to include airport codes it would be nice if PER was included (LHR is).
Also if a mod reads this perhaps we could change the thread title to "Qantas treats Perth poorly". My original choice of words was a little intemperate.
