Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

I know this thread is "Nice wines" so I'm sad to report these 2 went down the drain.
On a positive note, at least the sink now empties quicker

Distressing news, Buzz! We have a bottle of the AD2018 Lehmann - perhaps best to get drinking it sooner rather than later...

I may have stopped buying VinoMofo wines after being 'Cantiniere'd', October last year. But, ocassionally, I get to sample some of the good stuff they are peddling through swaps with Katy, Alzoam or AnonymousCoward. And what an Alzoam swap I had tonight, paired beautifully with Mrs Wozza's fine salmon linguini:

the Giant Steps Arthur's Creek Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2011

On Vivino and Cellar Tracker I have just posted the following tasting note:

2011 Giant Steps Chardonnay Arthur's Creek, Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley - CellarTracker

http://www.vivino.com/wines/3141450

"Wow. From the moment you pour this single vineyard Yarra Valley Chardonnay and see the vivid golden green hue, you know this is pure class in a glass! And to think, 2011 was one of Giant Steps poor vintages because it was so wet!

Freshly cut apples, citrus fruits, apricots and melon mix beautifully with a strong line of butter and a touch of toasted almond, minerals and kerosene. The palate is round, warm and lifting, following these magnificent flavours. The finish is full
with a fine buttery and minerally backbone that lingers an age. Such balance. And so much more to come. Try again in 2yrs time. A Wozza 95/100 (4.2/5.0) from me."

Sadly lacking photos but a bit of BYO at Upper Modern Bistro in Hong Kong (amazing food FYI) led to the consumption of a Domaine Bruno Clair Corton-Charlemagne 2010 followed by a Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St Jacques 2007. Both amazing wines with great structure and quite powerful in their respective manners. Both will also keep going for many many years.

The weekend wine. This one was still going strong and better than it's 1998 cousin-

And what a 52 year old Seppelts cork looks like-from their 1963 vintage port-

Oh my! Just a little jealous :)

85th birthday celebrations for my father and uncle at Noosa Springs over the weekend. Unfortunately due to his Chemo my uncle wasn't feeling up to drinking, so my bottles towards the party didn't make the trip from Brisbane and will have to stay in my wine fridge until my 50th next year:

Instead, we had these with finger food:

these with dinner:

and these much later in the night at an impromptu room party:

Was very impressed with the Geoff Merrill - although at the function there was no decanter, so we had to decant in glass. Was very closed at the start, after 10 mins it was starting to open up and after 20 mins was much better. Oak in abundance and a medium finish with little tannin. One I'm going to try and find for the home wine rack.

Funny, I drove through Eumundi on the way to the weekend party and thought about you (given our past PM's).

Was sad that we couldn't partake but I'll just have to wait for a year. In hindsight, I'd have changed the Moss Wood (1999 for a 2000), so glad we didn't drink it.

For which wine :D :D :D

You're the second person I thought about on my drive (actually, I added Simo to the list as well). Will have to bring up a decent bottle so you, Sedimental, plus drron, mrs.dr.ron and Simo) and I can have a long lunch - will have to post on the Sunshine Coast dining thread

Pinot Tasting Comparison

A bit of a cold snap in Melbourne had me searching for a match for the T-bone steak. Pinot it was, so in came the opened bottle of Top Paddock 2015 Yarra Valley Pinot, opened last Thursday, the 9th June. It has been lying down a third full for a while and I had no guarantees for a 6 day old opened pinot. It was stunning. Still pink, nose of cherry and a little heat. Maybe that's the answer. It's 13.1. But I am so amazed that it has improved . This is probably my sixth recently, none have disappointed. One has amazed. This one. More body, rough edges that someone mentioned are totally ironed out this is great pinot. It still retains a freshness that I find amazing. The fruit nose is still cherry dominated, not an ounce of olive there.

So onto a fresh bot of 2014 Duck Sauce Pinot from the Vinimofo. A tad lighter in the pour, this is a lot more savoury, no heat whatsoever , it's 13.0, a very slight hint of bronzing around the edges and obvious French oak that the Top paddock doesn't seem to have. A more refined wine, more elegant, but seriously good. At fifteen buckers, this is great Pinot. They both are.

Big question you have in the background ? Ali Ali.....The yarra valley wins the draw, and like the last five have been, simply beautiful complexity from a ten bucker. Amazing.

Tonight's wine from the recent Epiqure Winter Warmers deal. Very nice quaffer to go with our homemade pizza.

If it wasn't for the huge TWE blowout I've just had (I've just put my money where my wine tasting/opineing mouth was, and acquired a number of Penfold's Magill Estate 13, Wynn's Michael 12 and Lindeman's St George 13), I would be on the serious hunt for:

the Gemtree Vineyards Uncut Shiraz 2012

image.jpeg

What a fabulous wine, defying its pay station:

2012 Gemtree Vineyards Shiraz Uncut, Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale - CellarTracker

http://www.vivino.com/wines/7465660

"I think this may be my best under $20 Shiraz! What a regal wine, especially with the French oak notes that sing through the whole taste experience. This Shiraz is produced from organic, low yielding vineyards in the McLaren Vale with minimal winemaking intervention. Halliday gave it 95 saying it was a McLaren Vale powerhouse.

The nose and palate sync beautifully as rich dark berries, sage, salty hoy sin sauce, smoked dried meats, dark chocolate and fine pepper and spices fill the senses. The palate is med-bodied, smooth, lifting and slightly drying at the end. Drink now or up to 2022. Fantastic wine that punches well above its price point. A well deserved Wozza 95/100 (4.2/5.0) from me
."

I picked this up last year from WineMarket using one of the 20% promotion codes and one of those time-limited 10% cash back promotions, paying a hugely undervalued c.$11 a bottle at the time. For those that haven't blown the wine budget, you might want to check out the following WineMarket link to the 2012 (especially if the EOFY promo codes get generous):
