Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

This is not a deal as such, more of an FYI for those using Cashrewards. They've started excluding GST from their refund calculations.

For example, I made a WM purchase today of $350. The Cashrewards refund is based on the pre-GST price of $318.18. And therefore a slightly smaller refund.

Apologies if this is old news, but wasn't the case for my last Cashrewards purchase ~8 weeks ago.

I found with Vinomofo orders, sometimes GST was included, other times not....bit of an odd one.
 
Not too sure where to ask this question, but thought here might get the most exposure without starting a new thread...apologies Mods if this is the wrong place.

Over the weekend just gone I was enjoying a stop in at the ever cheap and ever quality Frango's in Petersham (Sydney). Needing a bottle of wine I popped over the road to a great little bottle shop run by an old Portuguese couple. Seemed to have some good wines at very good prices.

My question however is that when I went to the back of the store there is a whole wall of quite aged wines at what looked like quite cheap prices (considering the age on some). I didn't have the time to look closely, but a couple I did see where some Bin 8's dating back to the early 90's, some Wolf Blass Brown labels. I just wanted to ask if anyone has had any experience buying these wines from this particular store, they don't seem to be stored in very good conditions (literally just in a rack). I did ask the older lady at the counter about how they had been stored and she just said they had been there for ages. I'm rarely in Petersham and would hate to expect great things and end up with Vinegar so thought I would ask the Sydney folk on here if they have ever bought from here?

Georgehall, I go in there quite a bit (i.e. half a dozen times a year over the last 15 years), and I'd say you'd have at least a 50/50 chance at them being decent. They've had the same layout for years, and while those bottles may look shabby it's most likely that they're in high traffic areas (I see people resting their shopping baskets on the bottles/racks). The old couple are a dear lot, but if you have further queries perhaps email them through their site as the son looks after the online side and may be better able to explain their provenance. In their favour, they have been importing portuguese wines for years, and given vintage Port is stocked and needs lengthy cellaring they should mainly be across treating a wine well.

I've not drunk an aged wine from there yet, but do have a 1983 Vintage Port from there I've got to open soon. Though maybe not soon enough to report back to you! My advice - email them for some more info, then perhaps get a lower end penfolds from the late 90's/early 00's to try. If you're happy with how the bottle fares, get among it!

THey have way more than one rack - this is the Petersham Liquor Mart that I've mentioned a few times. They have all this stuff online anyway, so it's not like it's a secret ;)

FWIW my neighbour buys some vintage stuff from there every few months, and hasn't had any complaints. Obviously you run some risks with anything old that's been stored under cork...

I've not been here. But from the website they do have an extensive range of older wines - that time seems to have forgotten.

I think the risk that you get something that is undrinkable is much less than the risk that there's nothing left worth buying next time you visit now that you have let the cat out of the bag on AFF.

I certainly don't recall this place being discussed by frequenters of this site previously - at least not in the detail you have expressed.

I know I'm now planning a trip tomorrow :) And have been told by several wine buying friends that they are planning on going this afternoon now that I've given them the tip off.

Yes, wines like that need at least 8-10yrs...

How was the wine fair? What wines/offers/highlights?

Was thinking about going but not sure if worth it - for Melbourne, the shareholder one is in a few weeks time and apparently there might be non-shareholder ones on the following Tuesday and Wednesday (don't know because either they're no longer being held or I can't [post=1459765]access[/post] them)

edit: just realised that I'll be away that week...

Hi Qaz. I'd say it's worth the $20 admission each of me, AnonymousCoward, Katy and Alzoam paid for the Sydney event. There were just over 90 wines to taste in 2 hours, including some icon wines, like the Penfolds Max Schubert, Magill Estate and RWT, the Wynn's Michael and John Riddoch, Coldstream Hills Amphitheatre, the Wolf Blass Platinum, Saltram the Journal and Seppelt Show Sparkling Shiraz 04, (to name but a few). There was some nibbly food and the staff serving the wines were pretty helpful. The prices were mostly the same as you see on the CellarDoor.co website (but with some differences), except you got another $50 off for spending $300 - $499, another $100 off for spending $500 - $999 or another $150 off for spending over $1000. I really enjoyed it and really appreciated trying some serious (mostly young) icon wines. AC and Katy came away with some aged decent Wolf Blass (06) and other goodies. My tasting notes on the icon wines I tried will be posted to Vivino over the coming week as I steal some time (Dr Ralph will be pleased to hear I loved the Magill Estate - what a wine).

As expected it is the Maverick; arrived today; opened tonite.
It is stunning with a really aromatic nose that drags you in and then a big beautiful long soft palate.
It was something like 45 down to 35 with happybanker but they have now dropped it to 31.5 I believe.
This wine reminds of an old Tintara grenache that was made in an etched bottle. Charles Melton Nine Popes comes to mind too.
 
Wine Direct use it all the time in bundles to prop up the RRP. Has become tiresome. Different vintage from memory though.

It's a good deal price wise, poochio. But there has been a fair degree of bottle variation with this 2006, in particular the ones being acquired from Langton's. My 2006 was absolutely stunning. But it came in a very expensive Mystery Pack. The ones that were previously sold at $35 a bottle have not had the same reviews. I'm actually quite tempted, but I only want two and not 6.
