Interesting case of business IP and disgruntled employee :

Bluescope Steel stung by alleged corporate espionage | smh.com.au

What do you think of it?

I don't think we have the whole story, but I guess we can agree that what the woman is doing is categorically wrong. I thought, before opening the link, this was one of those cases where an employee develops something on the side or on their spare time that does not contribute to the company, makes a lot of money out of the idea and now the original company is coming back for a piece of the pie since it was developed on their time and resources.

Sounds like theft to me. No, not theft as the elements aren't there. But certainly IP cannot be taken in this manner.

If the spirit of the game was a consideration, there would never have been a West Indies tour - a cricket travesty all round. Although I thought Smith's suggestion was silly, at least he was thinking of giving the punters something mildly interesting to watch.
I agree about the tour never going ahead.

Smith's suggestion is not only wrong regarding the spirit of the game but there are so many people that have had a bet on the result of the game and the series.

I'm surprised anyone would suggest it after the Hansie Cronje affair.....

Bluescope may not have done enough to keep secure its IP. They'll have learnt a lesson.

IP cant exactly be physically locked away. So employees can take protected words/software etc and there will always need to be court battles if the offender takes no notice of legal letters re the offence.

We own IP and it is protected in the US, China, and Australia. We had to pay for a legal 'cease and desist' letter when someone used one of our IP products in the same context as our trademark. They stopped so no court case required.

Isn't that a bit like saying you may not have done enough to secure your home and contents from thieves... yet it doesn't mean it is OK for someone to nick your TV?

IP is pretty difficult to secure. It can be done legally, however sometimes you still get headaches across jurisdictions. That also doesn't cover any incidental damage if it leaks anyway, i.e. you can sue the person who leaked for whatever punitive or compensatory damages, and other people who happened to come across it can't use it either without penalty, but the fact remains the IP is out there now.

Finally, there is a very thorny issue of IP which actually hasn't been formalised as IP yet, let alone protected IP.

Ergo Melbourne is the better city

Nup! Because Melbourne's average is relatively low, the drought that they have been experiencing for the last two years has really begun to bite. I have given only rainfall figures. There is no mention of temperatures. Melbourne's temperatures are up and down like a bride's...anger. Diurnal ranges are often great also changes in temperature from day to day make the place pretty unlivable to those of us used to a more equitable climate.

There is no "ergo" about it. Melbourne can't hold a candle to Sydney, which is four ours ahead of Melbourne...
Our Harbour
Our Bridge
Our Bradman
and Our Opera House.

Melbourne only has Federation Square aka Fred Flintstone's home.

Meh. Melbourne is a fantastic city. Sporting capital, coffee capital, fashion capital etc etc. Fabulous wine regions, morning peninsula, great ocean road. How long can one city pin all its hopes on a harbour? Sydney-siders go on and on about Melbourne weather, but cant face the fact their own city is far more wet than ours.

Nope. The only thing Sydney has going for it over Melbourne is that it is over the border! :)

Coming from RAdelaide I am independent. Sydney is a great place to visit but if I was to live interstate then Melbourne it is. My son lives in Sydney and it is a hard place to work although he does have a great party life. Too great.

What the hell is "Our Bradman"?

Nothing other than a harbour.you need to spend a bit more time in Sydney.Pittwater and palm beach. In fact any beach is better than Melbourne's.Kuringai NP,Royal NP and Lane Cove NP.The Coastal road to Wollongong, blue Mountains and the Hunter isn't too far away.
And fashion capital.Spend some time in Paddington. And did you know one of the Finalists in the NY fashion week for emerging designers was from Sydney-The House of Cannon.Mrsdrron even owns a couple of numbers from there.
Sporting capital?only because Melburnians have nothing else to spend their money on!:p;)

Need to do better Blackie.

Forgot to mention the two best things about Melbourne - the football and the road to NSW

IMHO......
Sydney: 0
Melbourne: 1

If someone hadn't thrown a last minute suggestion to me to try living in London, Melbourne is where I'd be right now... ;)

I am sorry, who is this Blackie you are referring to? ;)

Oh, as far as fashion is concerned:

"When I give talks on this topic I always highlight Melbourne as a great example of how to do fashion festivals," says Mallis.
