Penfolds discussion and offers

Who's holding them for value - I'm in them to drink

You appear to have misunderstood what I meant by 'value'.

I have a problem paying $30 for something today that I can buy in 2 or 3 years time for $20 or $15. That's not good value and a waste of my present $30.

You are unlikely to see such a situation with Magill. And if you do please let me know and I'll have my credit card ready :)

Bugger - didn't realise that Woolworths gift cards worked at WineMarket. Something for next time :)

Don't feel too bad - the code isn't working, so guessing WineMarket are not on the WISH list or the code is too new.

EDIT THAT: I think Dr Ralph is right. They are not on the list.

Didn't seem to work though

Is it the typical 62800* WISH card number?

Noticed that as well. I do like the 707, though its a bit out of my budget...

I was told by a Penfolds rep that it's only available at the cellar door. They have jacked the price up from $350 to $500 too. The price increase on the 707 over the last few years has been insane. $500 is simply a complete joke. That's basically more expensive than anything from Bordeaux except for first growths on the right bank and the likes of Cheval Blanc and Petrus.

Having said that, I'm in Adelaide for the next week, just down the road from Magill Estate. Happy to pick up bottles of 707 for anyone who wants me to on their behalf?

No, I understood that financial meaning of value, however my use of value was different. When I started my collection in the early 90's buying cases of St Henri (6's), I couldn't afford Grange thus I started with St Henri instead (I was introduced to them at the Qld Cricketers Club by my father and a group of clients - we were buying them over lunch at ~$35 IIRC (circa 1990). I have never seen my collection as a store of value, rather the right to enjoy a decent red in the future with the right people.

I've a couple of Grange and 707's, but I haven't hit the RTW's or Magill's yet. Will be interested to try them at some stage

Not quite correct. See message #32.

Individual stores can order in for you.

$500 was the price paid.

Magill are truly outstanding. Rarely would you seen these wines discounted. At usually more than $100 a bottle, they aren't cheap, but they are value for money as a 'something special' wine to bring out at a dinner party.

I'm not suggesting that 389 and St Henri aren't great wines. The problem is that they don't hold their value. They can often be picked up at significant discounts only a short period after release. This is rarely the case with Magill

If you can find some St Henri 2010 for under the $75 I paid then let me know! Credit card at the ready ;)

I'm kinda surprised but it seems that 2010 St Henri can be had for around $130 or so. I thought it'd be much more expensive

As you would have already known the 2010 is an exception. 2009 can definitely be purchased for under RRP release value.

Saw it it at a local bottle shop yesterday for just under $100. 1 bottle limit though.

Just had an email from a friend who said he manage to secure 2 bottles of 707 today. Apparently it's in short supply. He refused to sell me one of the bottles!
Even penfolds don't appear to be selling them.

Bin 28 Kalimna available for $25.80 in 6 at Dan's - I remember paying about $29/$30 each historically on release so assuming this is good value and I should pick some up?
Dr Ralph - would appreciate your thoughts..

I think you are correct that it's usually around $30 on release.

However, discounts in the first week normally lead to a $25 to $26 price range. So I'd say that $25.80 is about normal for the discounted price.

However combine the WISH + cash back discounts and the price is closer to $22.50. That's a price point where I'd consider buying at.

Thanks Dr Ralph - I am across the WISH cards (5%) but could you point me in the right direction for the other cash backs? Thanks
EDIT - can see the additional 4.15% through Price Pal - are there additional cash backs? Does the 4.15% work if paying by giftcard?

CashRewards.com.au is 7% IIRC. Yes it works with the Wish gift cards.
