I'm flying to ADL next week in Y and received the usual email enticing me to part with my points for a J upgrade. 20k points for J on a 737 three hour flight, I think not. Row 4 or over wing exit rows will do me just fine.

But it just struck me. Since the whole Simpler Fairer rubbish, you now only earn 15 SC in discount Y for this sector. Used to be 20. Why then are the amount of points for a J upgrade (or reward flight) still the same? Can't have it both way QF.

Whilst QF have altered the earn rates, they haven't changed the upgrade zones (minus the increased costs).

Unfortunately QF can have it both ways, as this was highlighted fairly on in the piece on this forum.

What's even weirder though is they haven't made any attempt to match the zones (even while perhaps still keeping the increases). All up, it makes the program look quite a mess!

Read our AFF credit card guides and start earning more points now.

It's simpler and fairer for QF, that's why. For it's customers? That's another story.

At least the look reflects the reality :)

I didn't realise per to Adl had dropped like that.

SYD-HBA is another example. Down from 15 SCs to 10 SCs in discount Y. Plus, of course, the previously famous SC runs that included BNE-TSV. That leg is now down to 10SCs too.

Another is MEL-CNS. In the past you could route MEL-SYD-CNS or MEL-BNE-CNS (come on, which SC loving AFF member would fly direct when the alternate is usually only a few $ more, at least in my experience, specially during sale fares). Anyway since S&F, the routing via SYD (which I used to prefer due to the slightly better service on the longer sector, and chances of a 330 on the SYD-MEL v.v. sectors) now earns LESS SC than going via BNE.

I'm well aware of the changes for shorter routes. I didn't realise that ADL-PER changed, which is a longer route.

I'm also flying to ADL next week (from Sydney). Got the email as well prompting me to request a points upgrade. 15,000 points even though the flight only earns 10 status credits and 800 points. I'll be hanging onto those points...

If I flew SYD-ADL often I would feel very cheated. Didn't realise until now that PER-ADL had the same issue though.

When simpler & fairer (TM) was first implemented, didn't Qantas say they would eventually address these discrepancies?

The solution is simple. On domestic flights, charge 10K points to upgrade on flights up to 750 miles. 15K for flights 750-1500 miles. 20K for flights above that. Using the same mileage zones for earning and burning would be both simple and fair - right?

In the past few weeks I've experienced a few of these F&S anomalies as well. Points to upgrade from Y to J 20,000 for SYD-CNS vs 16,000 for MEL-AKL (20% fewer points for a 30 per cent longer flight - distance and rough time) on QF. 80 SCs earned for a 3.5 hour Helsinki to Madrid flight vs 60 SCs for a 9 hour Sydney to Hong Kong flight (on OW partners, in J).

So random and potentially confusing.

Yep. I recently booked SIN-CMB-LHR in J on Sri Lankan Airlines. Both legs earn 80 SC, even though the Colombo to London sector is 317% longer.

That would be logical and the customer would be able to easily understand the system. That can NEVER happen
