Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Nice Mersault 2011 at Number One at the Balmoral, Edinburgh. Loverly. Gentle malo and oak, subtle integration of peaches, apple and limes.

I stumbled on a restaurant called Demo in HEL tonight. Sensational is an understatement. Offers 4, 5 or 6 courses with no choices menu of the day.

It is a little bistro-style place and has 1 Michelin star. Also the record-holding Finnish resto for duration of continuous M star rating.

It will never get more than one, simply by virtue of its small style.

I took the matching wines - plus a glass of Champagne to start. Small producer stuff, well matched. Can't recall all the details, but posting from my phone so disinclined to go into big detail.

Suffice to say: if in HEL just get to this place!

Hopefully the pics will be able to do a bit of the talking.

Last Tuesday of the month's Blind Wine Options, not so easy!
IMG_2604.jpgIMG_2602.jpg
Three distinctly different Rieslings, the Alsace sweet in the mid palate, the Pfaltz (Germany) funky on the nose in a good way, and the Leo B wonderful secondary characteristics of marmalade, yet good acid driving it along.

Martin Wishart in Leith, Edinburgh. Exceptional food. After slurp of very austere and dry Sancerre, chose this for rest of degustation courses. Was ok but really should learn that these burgundies are very thin. Nice nose, good initially but all top, menthol driven fruit. Lack of depth and bass flavours after first glass.

Seriously good food. Two degustation menus, one shellfish and fish oriented and one crustaceans and meat, (plus a veggie one for non foodies, sigh), so one can share at table. Well worth one star rating.

Our Le Sol was oxidised and showed really poorly:(. The other bottle was tremendous. Thankfully the cork in the St Peter's went the distance. Truly beautiful drinking! (VM have the 2013 for $60 at the moment). With the meal, a cool climate shiraz from Ashton Hills, courtesy of the winemaker from Wendouree, and now apparently owned by Wirra Wirra.

Strolled around World Heritage listed Old Town Riga this evening. Just gorgeous. Weather cool, but not cold, so had a hankering to sit outside on one of the squares enjoying the still long twilight as summer very clearly comes to an end (the Latvians are all bellyaching about how cold it is - I had a short-sleeved shirt on this afternoon!)

But - how to avoid the 'traditional restaurant'? Hmmm, scope PleinAir; can it really be as good as it looks? Move on; scope others; nah - that must be the one.

Not wrong. 'Chopped steak' (aka beef tartare), duck breast (just sensational - crisp skin, tender, med-rare).

What to drink with that selection? Ding! A Barbera d'Asti DOCG - light texture, very dry; very seriously rivals Pinot with duck.

Good evening :).

Well chosen, JohnM. A good Piedmontese Barbara is hard to pass over, as is a good 'battuta'.

Postscript.

Strolling back to my hotel and encounter a country-style duo playing outside at a brewpub. Nice sound - a beer chaser is in order anyway ;).

These guys are very good - and so is the beer ;):).

Riga rocks!

A selection of recent contributions from my wine fridge. The Mamre Brook was particularly outstanding with lots of flavour

I had this over the last two nights:

Unfortunatly I'm very very disappointed... that it was my last one :(

It was an deep, earthy red and despite its relatively young age was already showing signs of sediment.

Couple of friends organised a Burgundy and Barolo extravaganza. I think that's a fair term to use with a Rinaldi and Corton are involved :)
