Outcome: I phoned the Insurance Law Service after being referred to them (ph 1300 663 464). They said that the ins co is not obliged to keep me on so there would be a risk in cancelling and doing a new but lower online quote with the same company.

So, thought I'd negotiate with the existing insurer one more time. After a lot of details and negotiations, when I asked about becoming a new costumer on line, they got serous with a new lower premium. So, a $1644 premium is now $1174 and paperwork will be resent. I still have 10 days before I need to pay so can keep thinking.

I didn't read your initial post properly. I had the cars insured with AAMI for several years. Every year when I got the renewal notice, I would go onto their website and get the quote from there. Invariably, it was always cheaper doing it that way and that's how I purchased it every year. The only thing I missed out on was the years of membership status. IIRC, when you get a quote directly from the website, it does ask you who your current insurer is, and I always nominated AAMI.

If it's quoting you a much cheaper price on the website, why can't you just get it there? Does it specifically say for new customers only?

Yes, I got my Alliance car ins on line for nearly 50% off the 'paper' price.

Yes, just for new customers. I got an online quote matching mine, but if you put in a street number next door, you get a quote. If you put in your real address, the price goes up.

That sucks  I'd go somewhere else, just because I'm stubborn like that and it would make me feel better.

And you then "move homes" a few days later?
