Why is Domestic J so damned expensive????

Wondering if there are any folks desperate enough to buy AA miles with a 15% bonus. I haven't seen such an ordinary deal since we joined AA a couple of years ago. That said I think a 35000 mile redemption for coast to coast travel with this latest offer would cost about $1,000 for business class return on Qantas. It is a deal if you have run out.

Yes thanks for the correction on the AA discount and bonus. It is not as good as the previous one and getting a $4000 domestic business class ticket for sub $1,000 is still acceptable for PER-SYD-PER.

Surprising you say that; although the slipping Aussie Dollar may have something to do with it.

The promotion has a 15% discount on base purchase cost along with bonus miles.

Best bonus is 27500 activated with the purchase of between 76000 and 100000 miles giving from 103500 to 127500 miles.

Cost to purchase 127500 AA miles until the 13th is $2,725.56 USD @US 2.14¢ per point; for 103500 its USD2,078.63 @US 2.01¢ per point.

Interestingly you can get 35000 for US839 but 41000 for USD866.

Playing around with dates PER/AKL in J there seem to be quite a few fares around the $900.00 mark with the dreaded "i" symbol indicating that travel between PER and SYD/MEL/BNE will be in economy with the onwards trans-Tasman flight in J.

There are Business Saver fares starting at $1,396.00 one way that are 100% J eg Sat 24 Oct you could fly on the red eye flight from PER to BNE/SYD/MEL then connect with a QF87xx codeshare fare operated by an EK A380 across the ditch. Stopovers are not permitted so you can't 'nest' the trans-Tasman sector on the Business Saver fare.

The Business Flex fare does allow a stopover but is approx $1,656.00 one way. If you wanted to fly on the LAN 787 the QF321 codeshare flight is available SYD/AKL. In the reverse direction AKL/PER the fare levels are similar however in NZD so ultimately less in AUD by a couple of hundred dollars.

Fares PER/NAN are similar to those to AKL however they do allow stopovers on the cheaper Business Saver fare rather than having to pay the higher Business Flex fare.

By comparison the same dates PER/SYD are $1,949.00 one way, PER/BNE $1,899.00 & PER/MEL $1,849.00 so it seems like you get better value going further a field.

QF need to keep the Akl - PER and vice versa prices down around what air NZ offers. NZ being a direct flight is already an advantage. The 787-9 aka dreamliner is a better hard product. If QF stuff up their pricing on this route then the only people choosing QF are those that don't know any better or those flying for status credits or QP. That flight does go on sale with NZ too. Have seen econ around $449 and business $1200 if early.

Looked at at transcon business prices and I'm not sure why they price them so high. Flex econ $686 gets 60sc whereas paying $1800 or so gets you 100 sc. If you pay more for your fare on NZ you get more APD and SP in line with what you paid.
