Quick sanity check ahead of tomorrow's QF127 which looks to be a non-refurb bird (front cabin is a 1-2-1 configuration). Currently in row 4 but have a few options upstairs too including the exit.

I've lots of J flying experience but never on the 747 before and upper deck on the 747 is a bit of a bucket list for me. But I fly this route monthly so there will be other opportunities.

How much better is the old first seat at this point? I assume it will be fairly well worn and tired. Would you keep 4K or move upstairs?

If it is 1-2-1 then it will be the old F cabin. I'd take that over upstairs. Grab a window seat in rows 1, 2 or 3 if you can.

It is indeed 1-2-1. Window seat row 4 is the best I can do in that cabin. Other choices are various window seats on the UD or an UD aisle seat exit row.

Tough call... but I think I'll stick to 4K and hope to tick off the UD bucket list item on the next trip. Cheers

Row 4 windows are coveted by experienced travelers due to the additional space on which to place items.

If it is the old F configuration then it is a no brainer. There is no way the F seats aren't way better than the J ones.

True, but I like being closer to the window, which you get from 2 or 3. I really like that cabin, it's dated but a delightful place to pass the time. Find the flaps hiding the inputs for the VHS tapes they used to hand out for your F viewing pleasure.

They were actually beta tapes ... well by 1999 they were.

There was still beta in 1999? I did not fly in this cabin until 2013, so I was 14 years too late to verify this.

Well... by some experienced travelers maybe. The more experienced travelers :)p) would select row three (widest aisle for more privacy, and long bed) or row 1 (private, 'view forward', but shorter bed).

Privacy is pretty good in all window seats ... however aside from 14A/K they is little adjscent riom to put "stuff".

For me and I have been lead to believe most that is important. No side storage in these babies ...

Hmmm, row 4 of course, since there isn't a row 5.
The only QF aircraft with a row 5 bassinet is the A388.

If existingg, Row 5 on 744 is an exit row, and while there's room for a play pen in flight; that I suspect would be frowned upon. :p

We have 4 x 747 (SYD-LAX-JFK-LAX-BNE) flights coming up ... seat map shows three refurb and one 4 class. The 4 class is SYD-LAX so hopefully it'll stick, although the recent AA/QF announcement might stuff that up.

We've gone for 1A/2A on the old bird and 14A/B on the others.
