I was in Germany at Easter last year, just about everything was closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday, of course most things are already closed in Germany every Sunday so that automatically includes Easter Sunday. One visit to Germany I was shocked to find even the 'self service' car washes were closed on Sundays.

Maybe that's the system we should have here, no shops open on Sunday nor any public hloiday, can you imagine the whinging from the likes of certain department store/white goods operators there would be then.

Two years prior to that I was in Italy at Easter and was really surprised to find that Good Friday was 'just another day' as far as I could tell and not a public holiday.

We were in France 4 years ago, as ANZAC day was Easter Monday and we went to Villiers-Bretonneux. Easter Sun and Mon were holidays; Good Friday was not. We had some grim options for dinner at a pub on the 25th in Amiens. They kept running out of meals; Little Miss didn't eat her sausages - they were made purely of offal, and smelled like it!!

Some years ago we were in Oklahoma city for Easter. There was a factory outlet mall a fair drive away.On mrsdrron's instructions I rang to ask if they were open Good Friday. The answer-why wouldn't we be.

The person in the checkout ahead on me last weekend had their loo paper scan at the wrong price. All 6 packets. She challenged the checkout operator asking for the items for free but was told the scanning code doesn't apply because she was yet to actually pay for the item.

Now the scanning policy is not exactly my area of expertise, but I thought the customer was in the right. Customer didn't challenge it through.

The scanning code of practice states that if the item scans at higher price than the shelf price then that items will be free. In the case of multiple items then the first items will be free of charge and the subsequent items will be charged at the lower price.

It does not state that you have paid just that it has SCANNED at a higher price.

Sometimes they'll go for what the shelf price is. Shelf price is either the lowest of the advertised (catalogue), ticketed on the shelf or discounted (sticker) price. Just because an item may be marked down individually it is the operator's responsibility to ensure they scan the correct bar code. It is not the customer's responsibility.

BTW - every WoW & Coles store that has been refurbed since late 2013 seems to have lost the scanning code of practice sticker once refurbed. I queried one WoW regional manager and he admitted they had taken a decision not to replace them as "They often peeled slightly and looked tacky."

HMMM.

So - if in a hurry. Pay and then go to the service desk.

If not in so much of a hurry - get ready for a discussion.

+ves of paying first:

  • Generally not such long arguments at service desk (as check out staff are anxious to protect themselves especially if did not scan mark down bar code)
  • If use a discounted gift card then you gain another 5% or more when the refund is given as cannot reverse a Gift card deduction
  • You do not get irate other customers in queue behind you threatening bodily dismemberment (rip your arms off you %$^$!)

- ves:
  • Most customers are apathetic and will walk away - so shop makes at many customers' expense.
  • Teaches noxious check out operators (not that many but have come across some award winning ones) a good lesson.

Happiest scanning outing:

7+ kg leg of Pork (on special that week not remarked) (catalogue & shelf ticket showed $6.99/kg but the label on the piece was still at $10.99)
8 or 9 different variety bags of chocolate specialities (put on a large display directly in front of checkout with 5 or 6 "Half Price" signs on it but no price shown. Turned out they had not removed the signs from the previous week's display. As I hadn't seen them in the catalogue on the way in I suspected as much)
A couple of large frozen catering/party packs (1.5kg and more) - weekly special (was actually token purchase that I did not expect to get for free!)
And a couple of other items I'd spotted on my 8 minute perimeter shopping visit.

All up is was well over $120 if it had been priced correctly, can't remember how much exactly the over-charging was but it was close to 60% more.

However

They discussed it with me for nearly 25 minutes before paying up (in cash not a new gift card). Took the store manager coming down (I asked for him once it got to 15 minutes).

Yes, coincidentally we did have a kid's birthday party coming up but we had not planned to give out 90%+ chocolate lolly bags.

As New York goes so does the rest of the country. The NYSE (& all other stock exchanges & futures exchanges) operate on Good Friday.

10yrs ago I flew from BNE to SFO on Good Friday. I distinctly remember the drive to the airport being like driving through a ghost town. A friend picked me up in SFO and hung out with me until we picked up Mr Katie a few hours later (he was on QF, I was on UA, I think). We went our for breakfast, and I was astounded at the difference - jiet a regular day in the Bay area. We would have gone to somewhere in San Mateo or thereabouts, not up in the city.

On Easter sat night, we went to Morton's for dinner. Our server was Jesus.:p

Ah. French andouille sausage made from a unmentionable bits of stray dogs. To be avoided at all costs, save for three days of toilet visits! ;)

haha, I am many years from retirement JohnK... Probably 150 years given the way our governments are going?
I think your problem could be more wanting to continue the weekends away travelling First and the top of the line hotels.

I have blown more than what I've got but I have had enough of working to a schedule. I want to wake up in the morning and think I don't need to do anything today and laze around the house. Or go out and play golf. Instead I drag myself to work kicking and screaming to make someone else rich and then don't even receive a CPI increase every September.

I wanted to retire at 50 but blew that theory away. Next target is retire at 60 so I can at least enjoy a few years playing golf before my body gives up.

That's them!! Little Miss didn't eat, but after a big day, both Mr Katie and his Dad ate theirs. I'm sure our days in Champagne afterwards helped make up for it. We wished we'd gone to the pub on the 24th for dinner & saved the crepe place for the 25th. :p

Penegal if you retire in 150 years you could pay the minimum payment on Westpac credit cards (one I saw would get to zero in about 120 years).

Pork from a pig with a leg over 7kg would not be my choice of roast!

Kicked off the plane this morning. Have definitely caught some kind of gastro bug from daughter. I was cursing the airline for their no changes within 24 hours fare rule, last night when I was feeling a little bit ill. Woke up tender but fine. Good enough to sit in J and sleep. Then stupidly had the welcome on board OJ. Eventually blacked out 5 minutes later and woke to an FA holding a sick bag for me.

They were excellent in handling the situation and I feel a complete goose for delaying them.

Not a great start to your day. Hope you're feeling better.

Not a good start at all. Definitely hope the week gets better.

It does not take a large pig to get 7+kg leg. Often Coles/WoW cut the leg in half and sell each piece around the 3-4kg size.

Turned out very well. Slow roasted @ 150C - came out moist and tender.

BTW have a look at full leg ham weights if you want to see some big pigs. Up to 16kg this Xmas gone by.

Here are some snippets from the Easter Show Prize Winners' web sites:

[h=1]1/2 Leg Ham Average weight 4.5kg[/h]

Well the other pax may have been a little bit understanding, given they knew the reason for the delay. At least you're in a good workplace for that kind of event. May have some fairly bland meals for the next 24 hours...
