In Adelaide the penalty rate for venues is $75 an hour. Wonder why shops and venues are shut?

What do you mean by venues? How does that result in anything for shops? I'm pretty certain the penalty rate for a shop is nowhere near $75 an hour. Not to mention the penalty rate varies depending on a few factors, it is not always the same rate.

Beautiful day! The forecast was terrible however, the actual was beautiful .... just like all the other forecasts the BOM issue. lol

I think here in Tassie when they predict a maximum temp it is more what they hope it will be rather than what it will be.

It's called 'aspirational forecasting' (TM, pat pending)

And careful generalising about 'Tassie'. You are in The North. Here in The South we have a) great weather and b) the Bureau of Meteorology to make it so.
 
I felt sorry for the owner of the little cafe we frequent. In a little group of local shops there are 5 cafes (yes in Melb we love our coffee) All open 7 days. Only he was open yesterday; of course it was his choice, and he was unaware the others were shut. Along with 2 staff, he and his wife both working and mother in law clearing tables; 2 kids also hanging around . Their choice to open (a good one as they were hectic) but they saved over $100 per hour by working themselves - and you would have to make a lot of coffees to earn that. The other cafe owners were enjoying a 4 day break and good on them
 
The 3 pubs in Wynyard,Tasmania were shut this Monday public holiday.Probably unviable businesses.

I earn less than minimum wage in Australia (on an hourly basis).

As such all retail and hospitality workers earn more than me (assuming their employer is compliant with the law). On any penalty rate day, workers are earning a multiple of my hourly rate. I earn the same regardless of day/date/time.

So really... shouldn't I get paid penalty rates too? Now which one of you is a labour lawyer? :p

I have paid more than enough tax this lifetime.

haha, I am many years from retirement JohnK... Probably 150 years given the way our governments are going?

$100 an hour? So there is a coffee shop award with $40 an hour as the base rate?

McDonald’s in the USA actually gave their employees who earn $8.25~ an hour, budgeting advice. In this advice they suggested the workers to get a second job.

The site includes a sample “budget journal” for McDonalds’ employees that offers a laughably inaccurate view of what it’s like to budget on a minimum wage job. Not only does the budget leave a spot open for “second job,” it also gives wholly unreasonable estimates for employees’ costs: $20 a month for health care, $0 for heating, and $600 a month for rent. It does not include any budgeted money for food or clothing.

Of course, minimum wage workers aren't really entirely on their own, especially if they have children. There are programs like food stamps, Medicaid, and the earned income tax credit to help them along. But that's sort of the point. When large companies make profits by paying their workers unlivable wages, we end up subsidizing their bottom lines.

Good Friday is always a mystery to me as to what's open or closed and particularly what licensed premises are open and at what hours.

I go with the rule of thumb that almost everything is closed on Good Friday. And all bottle shops/venues primarily selling liquor. It helped to work in retail for over 11yrs, and I also use a rule of thumb of hoe family oriented the holidays are - e.g. Easter or Christmas vs Queen's birthday. Not infallible, but it helps me.

I was astounded that the Starbucks in Highbury in London was open on Christmas day. Mr Katie went twice to get caffeinated beverages for us. My sister heard one of the baristas/servers comment that they don't celebrate Christmas, so it didn't bother them to be working that day.
 
Our wait for fish and chips last night was almost 90 minutes and we turned up at 5.15 PM. Next year we may have to get there a lot earlier.

That's why we had roast beef at home ;)

(And sometimes I enjoy kicking at cultural habits that aren't inforced by gospel)
