Infant travel and seat selection

After some advise...

Travelling to Perth as a party of three + infant, rang to request bassinet seat and agent said can only move me and not wife to front row, so we would have to split up ( so son & I in 1A & wife/daughter in 4J & K)

Is this normal practise as ideally would like my wife next to me for help?
 
The aircraft would be an A330, based on 4J/K. Sounds like they are limited by the seat configuration, which could be 1-2-1, or 2-2-2. In the first case, it's not possible to seat directly next to each out, either way there has to be some splitting up. Do you know which configuration is on the aircraft?

Both flights are the old config 2-2-2, also forgot to mention flying J

Understand one of us would be seated on the other side of the aisle.
 
IME typically I've found the service desk to be able to do most things when dealing with infant bookings, however if someone has already been allocated 1B you might be out of luck. That said might I suggest you actually check in as early as you can using a check in person rather than online / mobile checkin. They seem to wield the most power in moving people around to suit infant bookings and priority access to bulkheads / bassinets.
 
It might still be worthwhile checking the seat map for the flight, just to confirm the status of 1B

Did they say the reason they couldn't get you together eg there was already a person pre-allocated into 1B? Bassinet seats on domestic flights aren't blocked off for airport use like they are for international flights so I feel for families who make every effort to plan ahead & try to get bassinet seats sorted at the time of reservations but are gazumped by a WP who's booked earlier than them & grabbed row 1.

Even if you check-in early say 6 hours ahead won't necessarily guarantee the availability of 1B as it could've been allocated weeks prior to a Platinum. All you can hope for is that the CSA ask the pax in 1B if they're happy to move to another aisle seat to enable you all to sit together.

Bassinets are generally only suitable for infants up to about 6 months unless you have a very small infant so if you've got a toddler of 18 months it's pointless requesting one as they won't fit in it.
