Emirates 777 or Qantas A330-300

I am looking at July 15th. Anyway to tell if flights on that day have the new seats?

Currently expertflyer is showing the new configuration (1-2-1) on that date. So at this point in time, you are in luck.

I am one of the ones who have said never even in an Emirates 777 in economy with 10 across seating. But at the same time I am also disappointed with Qantas decision to charge to pre-allocate bulkheads in A333's even for status flyers.

So now comes the dilemma. Planning September trip to Thailand and I am inclined to book Emirates on QF codeshare there and back with very little expectation. Is there a noticeable difference between the 2 configurations? I do quite OK in QF A330 bulkhead with fixed armrest so seat width on Emirates should not be an issue. Only issue would be getting stuck behind chronic recliner but that could happen on either airlines.

Thoughts?

Wise decision or not will be assessed after the flights have been taken but I may not get to try Emirates economy after all if the reports I read on AFF that QF Platinums are automatically upgraded on Emirates flights are correct.

I did QF81 SYD-SIN, re-furb 330, last weekend in Y and yesterday afternoon EK432 SIN-BNE in 10 across 777.

They both were good, the QF flight was probably 65% full, so spare seat next to mine. New interior was a step up from before, IFE was almost much better and the new Y dining was quite good.

For me, the EK432 is much superior to the overnight flight on QF from SIN-BNE. I do prefer the 3p ish take off from SIN getting in around 1am. That flight was 95% full but I was on the right side of plane and the 3 pax there was just the same as any other 3 pax aisle. Didn't eat on the flight, had lunch in town before, then did have a bit at the Emirates Lounge, so wasn't in need of food.

Cheers
BF

Perhaps when Y is full. It certainly did not happen to me (QF WP) on my first ever EK flight - MEL-SIN on a 777 in Y.

10 across EK 777 is like whY in a 738. Ok for a 1-3 hour flight but unacceptable for anything longer, IMO.

I can speak from personal experience that even QFF P1s are not automatically upgraded on Emirates.

I guess the time would be right to try Emirates. Worse thing that could happen is discomfort for a few hours which can be cured by taking some liquid medicine through the flight. ;)

The time I got upgraded on Emirates, Y was full. Prior to that I've been right down the back in one of the rows where there are two seats, that was ok and having a shadow helped. I've requested exit row seats several times and been given them, however I must admit I prefer the Qantas 330 exit rows, Emirates seemed very narrow on the 777 and last time having quite a large person next to me didn't help.
I missed out on an exit row the time I flew Emirates 380 and didn't enjoy the experience at all, again I'm happier to fly Qantas 380 and be down the back in Y on the top floor.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but can anyone advise me if flying on EK metal out of Bangkok on a QF ticket, does one check in at the Emirates or Qantas check in? I am guessing that there would be access to both lounges?

You check in at the operating airline's counter. You can visit both lounges.

Even in old J I would prefer QF 333 over EK 77W. Both are sloping seats, but QF has better food and service (IMO).

In any event, I would expect that you would get new J.

I flew Bangkok return recently and had a bet each way, up with Qantas, return with EK (all on a Qantas ticket). The one plus for EK is the chance of an upgrade to First, which I was lucky enough to get.
As an aside, the Emirates flight showed me eligible for the limousine service on both the Qantas website and the Emirates "manage my booking" site. I booked the Sydney Airport to home leg on the qantas site, but held off on the Bangkok transfer as I was only transitting overnight and not sure where i would be staying. When I did get around to booking the Bangkok transfer, the option was still on the Qantas site, but greyed out. I was able to book on the EK "manage my Booking" page. I received confirmation emails for both trips, showing the request as pending. I had a bad feeling about it, but could find no way of confirming my booking. When my Bangkok car did not turn up, I taxied it to the airport. I mentioned to the Lady at the Emirates lounge that my car had not turned up and queried whether I could expect a car in Sydney. It all got very convoluted as, after phoning Emirates, she was directed to ring Qantas, which she did, to confirm that my car was booked. She spent quite a bit of time on my issue that i felt the need to buy some chocolates to thank her. Her final message was that "Mark from Qantas" had confirmed my car was booked.
After a very comfortable flight in my upgraded seat, I was brought back to earth with the news from the Limousine rep that Qantas ticketed passengers are no longer eligible for the limousine.
Apologies for the long winded post, but i guess my message is that Qantas and Emirates websites are not quite up to date, in that they show Limousine services available to Qantas ticketed passengers when it now seems they are not. Be warned!
Flying SIN to MEL in mid July in J. I have a choice of EK 777 or QF A330-300.

Which would you choose. Having flown the 777 previously I would probably choose it over the A330-300 unless I managed to score the new J class seats.

What are the chances of that?

That's strange. We did exactly your trip but from Adelaide - (Syd) - BKK - (Syd) - Adelaide in December January 2015 with domestic Q and Emirates J international (and also F upgrade). Chauffeur Adelaide, Chauffeur BKK both to and from airport.

The chauffeur service was only booked through Qantas website. Maybe that's when it went pear shaped.

We are doing DXB trip on Emirates at Christmas. Maybe we should book through the Qantas website. But looking at the Emirates website it allows us to book. Might stick with Qantas.

Silly question, but do you earn QF status credits flying on Emirates metal on an Emirates ticket?? The Qantas site seems to not support this.

No. If flying Emirates it must be booked through the Qantas site to get credits. And only on QF codes. Sometimes they slip in an EK code on the Qantas site.

I have not contacted the airlines, but the Limousine organiser at the airport said it was a recent change for Qantas ticketed passengers not to qualify for the limousine. He was a bit harassed as he was bearing the brunt of disgruntled Qantas passengers. My Sydney ride was booked on the Qantas site and then showed up on the Emirates page. Might be worth a quick call to make sure you are not stuck? I was a bit annoyed at the conflicting information I was getting. I look forward to hearing how you go with your trip, good luck with it and hope you have a great trip.
