Hi. I'm booking a work trip (business class) and found QF 96 while playing around with schedules (I'm coming from JFK - more on that in a bit). I prefer the take-off and landing time of QF 96 for my return to Melb but noticed it is not an A380 but a 747...is it a refurbished 747? how comfy? Tell me about the comfort level of QF 96 business vs QF 94 (A380)...thanks!

Re: coming from JFK - Last year I had the pleasant experience of flying on AA from LA to NY (or was it NY to LA...can't remember)...anyway, I couldn't believe how much nicer AA business was than the junky old plane QF flies between JFK and LA. Now, I think taking AA is a bit more expensive so I can only justify it if I take an AA flight to make the earlier QF 96...as I know I will have to be booked on AA as the only JFK-LA QF flight is timed around QF94. Any thoughts on this (and why doesn't QF fly a nicer plane between JFK & LA)?!

For the Melb to JFK flight I'm staying a few days in LA so I definitely will be flying AA business class on that leg - happy me.

Thank you

The QF JFK-LAX should be a refurbished 744. The same as QF96.

I'd take the AA/QF combo given the earlier arrival is more suitable.

No guarantees of a refurb while the oldies remain in the fleet.

This is going to be tough - I'd rather get in a few hours later than try to sleep on a non-refurbished plane. Do they really still use (even occasionally) non-refurbished 744 on the LA to Melb leg?

The non refurbs have been seen ex LA to SYD and BNE this month, but not to Melbourne so far.

Yeah ... MEL is unlikely (but not impossible) to get a non 744ER due to the additional distance from LAX.

All 6 if the 744ERs have been refurbed.

Ok - I might risk it for both outbound and inbound - the 5pm to LA also works better (I just found that as well - not sure if these are new (last 12 months) or that I never saw them as I was always going onward from LA and hadn't searched in a way that revealed these as options).

I like the idea of having my morning and afternoon somewhat free before heading to airport (and I get to see the kids off in the morning without trying to pack and leave for the airport while we are also trying to get them out the door) and then really being able to sleep before arriving in LA at 2pm LA time...then only have to survive 6 hours before going back to bed LA time.

I'll be kicking myself if I end up on an unrefurbished plane, but the times seem so much better (for me).

What does OJA stand for?
