Hi all,

I am new to FF points and only have a Qantas membership since Jan 2014. My first FF flight using Qantas will be in Jan 2015 to Auckland, Nz. However at the same time I am sponsoring a trip for a distant family member from Boston to Auckland. Since I am paying the fares for the trip, I would prefer to claim the points to my Qantas FF account. Is this something which can be achieved easily?

The only way is if your relative joins Qantas FF (it's free if you live outside Australia I believe), and then once the points have posted to their account they do a family transfer to send the points to you.

If they join and collect points under their account, you will be able to do a family transfer once they get 5,000 points in their account (I am assuming here, by 'distant family member' you are meaning a geographically distant one! One that would be genetically close enough to be a family member!)

@opusman Thanks for the pointer.

@woodborer The person I am sponsoring is my second cousin, hence the "distant" part. Will they still qualify as family members?

There's a way around the limitation of transferring balances <5,000 points.

Say family member has 2,500 points. Transfer 5,000 to family member then transfer 7,500 back from family member.

Thankfully you don't have to prove the relationship to the family member ;) ;)
To rephrase that - "I am not aware of any anecdotes that QFF have asked for proof of a family relationship".

I transferred 5,000 to my SIL so he could then transfer 8,500 to me. Then Mrs B got in his ear. Guess who got the points :mad:
