Dear AFF community,

I have done a search of the archives and the Qantas site and think the answer is to just forfeit the leg but open to your wisdom.

In April I booked return red e-deal tickets SYD-MEL for myself & son (not a minor) for end of this month at $247 each return.
I need to travel to Adelaide and now plan to travel SYD-ADL, ADL-MEL with work paying as there is not time to return to SYD and take the original flight. Looks like I can't cancel one-way of the e-deal (even if I work out how to separate the pax bookings) and if I cancel my return trip, to rebook the same MEL-SYD flight is $185 plus the $77 fee.

cheers

So you would be no-showing for the original SYD-MEL leg?

Just be careful that QF don't cancel your MEL-SYD sector.

Good point - Is there a way to cancel the SYD-MEL leg without calling and incurring more charges?
Assume my son can't just rock up and say he is travelling alone.

It's domestic, I believe there are ways to notify QF that you won't take the first leg without canceling the return leg.

Call and ask QF to split the booking into 2.

Cannot do it online but I thought it was possible to cancel first leg and retain the return leg of a domestic booking as domestic bookings are a series of one way flights.

Should be able to do it by calling and this shouldn't involve any charges.

I am fairly sure that this is correct.

should have been simple?
Well not really.
Managed to split the bookings by phone (which I could probably have done on-line) and have them still linked. I got a new booking reference immediately. Then I requested my SYD-MEL leg be cancelled. Was told it was done and hung up. Had been pretty smooth service.
Logged into check and the entire ticket/had been placed into credit.
Another call and as it was Q's fault they reinstated the ticket at no charge.
I was told I couldn't cancel/place in credit the the first segment of a return trip.
Only way was to change to after the return trip and then to place into credit and to get charged a $114 fee for both changes, leaving the flight credit at about $20. Not sure why this was going to be $114 rather than $77.
So, I asked what is to stop me just not turning up for the flight? "That is what I recommend, I can process a forfeit for this segment".
Segment cancelled, no credit but also no chance of my son having to answer questions about why he is travelling alone.
The risk of booking an e-deal.
Just happy it is resolved - thanks all for your help.

BTW - anyone hear this story about the 2nd segment cant occur if the 1st hasn't?

All that needs to happen under the Conditions of Carriage is for Qantas to be advised that the first leg is not required, then they do whatever they do to mark it so.

I don't think you are able to split bookings online AFAIK
