Hi all,

I'm thinking of switching to an Android based phone and am looking for some advice as to which is the best option.

I'm currently running a Nokia Lumia 920, and while I do love the interface and especially the latest OS update, but I feel like it's time to give android a go.

I am currently contracted with Telstra until January and my preference is to stay with Telstra.

My options as I them right now:

1. Recontract with a Galaxy S5 for $77/month 2.5GB data and "new phone feeling"
2. Recontract with a Galaxy S4 for $70/month 2.5GB data and "new phone feeling"
3. Recontract with a HTC One (M8) for $70/month 2.5GB data and "new phone feeling"
4. Wait for the Nexus 6 to come out, buy outright, pay out my contract and go on a $55/month plan with 1.5GB data.

Am I missing something? Is the S5 worth and extra $7/month? Any advice appreciated.

My approach which has saved me heaps over the years is to wait until the next model comes out and grab the earlier version.

E.g. When the S4 came out I grabbed the S2 - two years later I re-contracted for a breand new S4 after the S5 came out.

The approach can save $20-$30 per month over a twenty-four month contract. ;)

I kind of agree with that sentiment. The reviews I'm reading of the S5 seem to say it isn't a big improvement over the S4.

I have the HTC M8 and am really happy with it. I'm an Android fan. This is also my 3rd HTC phone. I just prefer the HTC UI over the Samsung one.

My real advice is go into a store and have a play with the different phones. The one you like the look and feel of and the UI that works for you is the one you should get.

I wouldn't get an older model if you plan on keeping it for 24 months. 12 months, then perhaps.

That's the key I think. With an older phone I would only need it to last 12 months.

I still haven't heard anything bad about the M8. It may be the front runner as of right now.

Also got a M8. Had the S4 before that. Chalk and cheese difference, HTC UI (Sense) so much better than Samsung, battery life lasts up to 3 days at a push.

I highly recommend the Nexus phones.
The pure Google software, without the manufacturer bells and whistles, always runs perfectly and always has the newest features.

Give some consideration to the Nexus 5 or maybe even wait for the next Nexus to come out.

The Nexus 6 is definitely on my radar.

Thanks. Will have to dig a bit deeper in my research.

I have a GS4 at the moment and will be getting a Note 4 as soon as it is released at the end of the month. I use my phone mainly as a mail/Internet device so like as big as screen as possible.

I have a Nexus 5 purchased outright. Free to go with any carrier. There are some really good prepaid deals out there which are cheaper than a contract IMHO

Thoughts on the Nexus? Worth waiting for the 6 to come out?

Love my Sony Xperia. Was taking underwater photos today while the kids were swimming.

I am a serial phone abuser, and as such very happy with my Moto Razr M, just wish it has dual SIM so I could ditch my Galaxy s3.

I am also a very big Android fan, and I'm currently on my 3rd HTC (M7). I agree with others that you should go to a store and have a play with the phones, the feeling of the phone in your hand and flicking around the menus can sometimes be the dealmaker/breaker.

Also, even though the Nexus 5 right now is getting a bit old, you're still getting a lot of phone for your money.

The Nexus 5 is great. It's seriously amazing value for money.
The only issue I have with it (coming from an iPhone) is the camera is a bit coughpy in comparison.

From what I've read, the Nexus 6 will be made by Motorola (5 was LG) and will be larger than the 5.
If the 6 is as cheap at launch as the 5 then it might be worth waiting for it. But depends how you feel about the size increase.
Pure Android is almost always going to be better than a carrier modified version imo. And not having to wait for updates is another bonus of the Nexus line.

Might be worth taking a look at the Motorola phones too (Moto X, etc). I imagine they'd be good but I don't really know that much about them.
