Effective 1st September 2014, the city tax has now doubled. A bit annoying, but what can you do....

Rome doubles hotel tax - Telegraph

Received an e-mail from the hotel we're staying at advising us of the change, the former cost and the new cost; so that was good on their behalf at least!

Would have been better if they absorbed the tax increase instead of passing it on to you

Tourist taxes are annoying. Governments find them easy and convenient to implement (don't annoy locals with additional taxes, unlikely to deter someone from holidays who would go anyway), which is the reason why they are so popular.

I was hit with this recently. Checked into the hotel on 2 Sep to find the tax double what was expected. Couldn't help but notice whilst I was there that there were other areas where they weren't so vigilant in collecting what was due to them.....

Other areas, such as? This tax only applies to Rome. Each city tends to set their own rates AFAIK, e.g. Naples had a different level.

Could always go somewhere else...

Europe is hardly lacking for great destinations....

True, but people want to go to Rome. So they'll pay up.

Same thing with places like New York. Sure you can say it's overrated and so on. But people want to and will go. And they all know it!

It may be a doubling of price but at least it is only a double of a fixed cost rather than a doubling of percentage. Yes, it could work to advantage or disadvantage in many cases, but I'd fathom it broadly more hurting if it were, say, a 10% tax doubled to a 20% tax.

Only thing left now is make sure you don't get robbed (or pickpocketed) whilst in Rome.

Probably should have been clearer. There were a lot of people not paying for fares such as on public transport for a start.I wasn't referring to taxes in other areas. I have no issue with paying it. Just found it amusing how quickly they implemented this when they weren't so vigilant in policing other things.
