Travelling from Adelaide to Perth on Qantas. Travelling from Perth to Hong Kong on Cathay.

Hoped to be able to check luggage straight through to Hong Kong from Adelaide all being OneWorld but Qantas have told me that its up to the individual airport to decide if they'll do this.

Is this correct and if so, what's my chances of getting baggage checked through to destination?

The information you have been provided is incorrect.
With a OW -> OW connection (doesn't matter if same or different tickets) you will have your baggage transferred as per QF's interline agreement.
This information is available on QF's website (you do have to dig for it), so you shouldn't be receiving incorrect information relating to this.

we were discussing something a little similar a week or so ago and I mentioned check-in staff may not be across the rules (even suggesting I collect bags in sydney when connecting between qantas and oneworld).

if the check-in agents refuse, stand your ground! you don't really want all the ground of having to collect bags and cart them between terminals.

Well, I'll try to stand my ground but if this is the reply directly from Qantas don't know that my chances will be that good.

As your flight's are booked on two separate tickets we cannot guarantee your bags will be checked through, as it's up to the discretion of our Airport team. Please check with our team on the day of departure.

Like I have said, you need to search for it on the QF site. The FAQ I posted I don't think has been updated, so really there isn't any discretion by the letter of that document.

Thanks mannej

I just meant I can see some hassles because I quoted this already to Qantas and they still said, "only maybe" but hopefully it will work out ok. I'll post back and let you know how I went.

How long is the transit in PER eg a few hours or overnight?

Is that a response from social media?

It certainly doesn't sound like an answer given by anyone who has worked at an airport or had any kind of operational experience which is exactly the type of people who should be in that role.

unfortunately OBB it does seem to be consistent with the discussion we were having a couple of weeks ago. Some agents simply don't want to through-check bags despite the rules and/or Qantas policy. It is a shame the company representative has not addressed this issue to provide clarity.

Yes it is a reply from social media.

The transit in Perth is quite a few hours, so I really don't want to be dragging luggage around as I might go into Perth to kill some time.

Not that its relevant in this instance but Emirates checked through my bags (all on one ticket though) last time I traveled with them and that was a 24 hour stopover. I'm sure the agent said as long as it was under 36 hours but I'm not sure. She stepped in when the agent processing our luggage told us we had to collect it in Dubai.

Qantas CSA in Adelaide didn't bat an eyelid when we asked for luggage to go straight through to Hong Kong. She was very nice. She checked our passports and put through the luggage and gave us our boarding passes for the Cathay flight.

Unfortunately the amount of wrong information spun out there is likely to increase now with Qantas cutting so many staff and relocating call centres.
I ring Qantas corporate several times a week with the AFF Qantas Club memberships and have already noticed the difference.
Times on hold have increased and knowledge levels have decreased.
