Now, I'm aware that about the rules - have to be a QF flight number and only to certain locations.

My interest is that my partner and I want to fly to JFK next year and do it in EK A380 business (yes I know it's a lot further, but I'm not a fan of QF business and new seats won't be in the A380 or 744 ...) yes, petty to want the stand up bar so much... but that's not the point.

If we were to book SYD-DXB-JFK rtn on the Emirates website, would we get points and SC for the SYD-DXB route as I know there is a QF code-share, but they do not show that number when you book. Have to forgive my ignorance if there is a stupidly obvious answer.

The QF code only appears when you book through the QF web site. If booking through EK all flights (including those operated by QF) will be coded EK and will earn you QF points only, no Status credits.

It depends on the flight number really.
If you can get a QF flight number on the EK flight you will get the SC's, if its an EK fight number it will be points only.

It is not possible to book Australia DXB USA on emirates on QF flight numbers by booking through Emirates or Qantas direct. They cannot sell you part tickets. The agreement btw Qantas and Emirates forbids such bookings.

You could book two separate legs SYD-DXB on Qantas then DXB-JFX on Emirates but this would cost far more than a direct Emirates flight in F. QF return in business SYD DXB is more than the whole flight to USA in F on Emirates.

So no status credits on such a trip. FF points only, or join Emirates Skywards and you'll get silver after the trip. (Gold in F.) We wanted to to BNE-BOS the same way but it is impossible. Qantas is protecting its US routes.

NB: see the thread about rip off by Australian banks unconscionable forex charges using Australian credit cards to pay for Emirates flights direct through Emirates web site in A$. You need to pay via PayPal or direct debit etc, or pay through a travel agent to avoid (what I consider to be illegal) forex charges of 2.3-3.5%.

I had a feeling that was the case. Many thanks... either we go with the disappointing QF J product to LAX-JFK/DFW for full points SC... or go with a one-world product and get screwed on the points/SC front.

Interesting a slightly OT comment from me here.

Having just hopped off an EK A380 (90 min ago) and travelling in J the product is not all that wonderful IMHO. Their B777 J is good but the A380 is not very good when it comes down to the sleeping part of the journey. The bar was great, the crew was great but the seats/beds are very narrow and not very comfortable.

We did A380 J last year and loved it, really didn't like the 777 EK. I do think the CX product is probably more comfortable. But the bar is a total god-send for a 14 hour flight, just to be able to get up and sit down in a more social space.

Yes I found the EK 380 J seats very constrictive and claustrophobic. When the tray table is down you can hardly move at all.
Too much space given to pointless bling like the minibar.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
