Melatonin Recommendations

The melatonin that I bought in the US in the late 90's was good stuff. However, the product that is around now seems rather "light" and seems nothing like that which was around previously.

apparently the QF FA's 'helper' of choice during crew rest on long haul is:

1/2 a valium, 1/2 a xanax, 1/2 a panadol!

I take 5mg for a couple of days for jetlag. Does work well but sometimes I also wake up feeling like I've got a mild hangover.

Also purchased in the USA.

Don't forget American manufacturing standards may differ??

Reading the article in the following link suggests there are concerns for taking over 1mg.

http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/sleep-newzzz/201102/melatonin-not-magic-bullet-sleep

Read words of caution towards the end.

Interesting article, thanks. I'm still pretty happy with my own GPs advice that 5mg is ok as I was taking it, for a few days after arriving after long haul.

I'm thinking a lot of the article is motherhood / US over pre cautioning but certainly worth considering for anyone contemplating taking this hormone.

Noticed yesterday that Melatonin is now available over the counter in pharmacies in Singapore. Both Guardian and Watsons had it at Changi.

Slightly OT but would travellers need to disclose supplements like melatonin and others on arrival in Australia?

I seem to remember that it's labelled as a dietary supplement. So, no need to declare anything I would say.

Definitely placebo I'm afraid, homeopathy is absolute nonsense.
You can't tell homeopathists they are nonsense.

I remember many years ago going to a homepathist for some condition and ended with an allergic reaction worse than what I had to start with. And I was travelling overseas in the next week or so. Hmmm. Never again.

You can get 6mg over the counter in Bali...

Along with 50mg of Tramadol, 25mg of Predesolone, but can't buy Nurofen Plus without a prescription.

hahaha really? Wow.. consider me placeboed!

In AU you can get Circadin, melatonin ER 2mg, but only on prescription.

I am not sure of the concentration of the OTC 'homeopathic' remedy because lots of things are starting to label themselves as homeopathic when they clearly have actual measurable concentrations of herbs.

Last time I prescribed melatonin the clowns at chemist warehouse gave the homeopathic one instead of circadin...
