Anyone on AFF know of an Australian, preferably Sydney based, stockist of Briggs & Riley luggage. I'd like to be able to actually check out a piece of carry on luggage I'm interested in, before forking out upwards of $500.

Good luck with that as I have also been keeping an eye out for some time now, - Sure you can 'net' buy but that does not help you for a touch test and visual inspection up front.
A check of the B&R website does not list any 'Stockist' in any Australian state.

Stateside they are regularly on sale in major retailers from time to time (Bloomingdales etc.- and at specialist luggage stores) - in the same way DJ's and Myer regularly sell Samsonite etc. at 30~40 % off now and then - but the discounting is more around the 25% mark that I have seen for B&R.

I have used one of their larger duffels for sometime now and it is still in great shape - build quality and design are very good.

Although for the vast majority of my trips I do prefer my carry on to be just that, 'Carry On', as in nil wheels. I also did pick up one of the B&R, TORQ, carry on spinners from a stockist in Santa Monica around September last year.
I usually take it on trips where I know I'm likely to have long walks between gates / terminals etc. Again it has been a good buy and the external section for laptop storage make extraction and return a breeze at security check points. Again its tough but light enough and has the same good build quality in this hard shell unit and it has not missed a beat also.

I'm very interested to find out if there is anyone selling genuine Briggs & Riley in Aust. Although if they are I would hazard a guess that they would be charging like a wounded bull for them compared to US pricing.

Indeed, unfortunately I wasn't able to get to any physical stores in the US last month to try them out.

It seems their Transcend line is currently on special at a lot of retailers. I'm looking at the Baseline Expandable International Wide carry on, bit concerned it doesn't meet AUS Domestic limits, but not by a lot (and have they ever checked to that extent?)

Thanks for the feedback they appear to be a good brand, I'm just hesitant to press the go button on what would be over $500 once delivered to Australia without knowing what I'm getting. Id probably get it from an AUS retailer if they existed anyhow.

I do have an opportunity for a relative to bring one from the US with them next month, however they are likely to check-in the bag, which I'm fearful of, damage etc..as i want it ot be a carry on bag that I know I can look after.

The particular Model I'm looking at is their International Carry-On Expandable Wide-Body Upright (U121CXW) Baseline:

Its priced on their official website as $469, and when you add shipping from their provider, the shipping is an extra $220!

Yikes. And at 4.2kgs I'm concerned it might be quite a heavy carry-on that leave little weight for actually items inside. I wonder if anyone else has experience with this model?

Also interested, as the AirBoss that I currently use isn't going to go so well with a suit, which unfortunately I will need in the new role.

Luggage Pro shipping isn't that much.

Nice find, however while its the same price $469, shipping to Australia is starting at $94
Amazon will ship to Australia for about $55.

Should have thought of Amazon, but its like the internet version of Bunnings!- Can't go there without spending a lot on stuff you didn't know you needed!

If only you could ask them to stuff other purchases *into* the bag before shipping..

Have to be the devils advocate here- the U121CXW has "Dimensions with Wheels & Handle: 21" x 15.5" x 8.5" / 53.3 x 39.4 x 21.6 cm (Here), as a NB on QF I'd be thinking that they wouldn't bend on the published 56x36x23 for me.

The U122CX has Dimensions with Wheels & Handle: 22" x 14" x 9" / 55.9 x 35.6 x 22.9cm, with the same internal capacity.

Also the Transcend series seems to be on sale on the website.

However I'd like to know if there are any B&R real life QF users out there??

From Flyertalk. Sheesh- there's some info on that site...

That a good find!

For internatonal travel on QF its not so much the size I'm worried about but the weight.l hare been asked to place carry on onto the scales before, but not on size.

May not work domestically though

The last post on this thread over on FT makes the following pertinent point:

I never carry the wide-body internationally as IIRC one of the dimensions exceeds the maximum size allowed by many international airlines. Internationally I will always use one of the regular 20-inchers. Note also that traditionally for the Baseline range Briggs and Riley measurements were inside the case not out so the actual measurement goes bigger than the indicative size given. The Baseline luggage I have is defo sized this way.

It's just not worth taking the risk of having to check the item if checkin or gate staff decide to check more diligently that day, or if they are being particularly strict that day due to load factors or something.... or if you have a segment on Emirates.

Here's a summary I've put together for B&R carry on bags:

Clipboard01.jpg

I think given:
a) The Cost, including shipping to Australia
b) The oversize for domestic use
c) Risk of weight issues for both international and domestic

I think I'll give the B&R a miss. My main reason for looking into it was that it had the suit compartment.
There is a much more expensive Tumi alternative also, but will continue looking at options.

Good summary there! But I'm sure that the QF Dom limit is 115cm for 1 bag, 1x 105cm bag and a garment bag-May become my option or 2x 105cm bags.

The other thing that has made me look elsewhere is the 115cm limit for Qantas\ JQ and the 105cm limit for VA. If I have to own two bags and pick and choose based on my itinerary I'd look at a 105cm bag + Garment sleeve.

Unsure if there is any logic in the 1x 115cm or 2x 105cm bag thing that Qantas do...

Eagle Creek pouches look handy.

Will stick with my current arrangements, an Antler that is just under 115cm - have posted about it early last year on this thread: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....travel-options-wp-g-sin-46436.html#post757093.

You are right about the domestic carry-on limit. I've all this time been thinking 1x105cm domestically! (QF link here: Carry On Baggage Allowance | Qantas)
