Having managed to lose 20kgs over the last 6months, I desperately need some new suits that fit me. Since I am headed to Singapore next week and then onto Penang, I am hoping to find a tailor over there where I can get some new suits made up. Does anyone have suggestions how to find a good tailor in either Singapore or Penang?

Justin

A couple of good ones - one in Penang

Jag Men Fashion Tailor - Google Maps

And in Singpaore:

Maharajas Custom Tailors - Google Maps

according to this FT thread http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/asia/666270-tailors-penang-coughet.html

Also in SIN try

1. Justmen's - www.justmens.com
2. Eurobest at Pagoda Street - Tel: (+65) 6323 4082, Fax: (+65) 6323 4083, Address: 31 Pagoda Street
3. Prince Tailor's at Far East Plaza
4. Dion Collizone at Penisular Shopping Centre.

Arrh - but if you have a choice where is cheapest /Best place for Tailoring in SE Asia?

I plan to make a side trip to Hoi Anh in Vietnam again, as I was comfortable with what I got last time, even though I paid 30% too much (USD 14 per shirt) but they will try for usd 25 per shirt. I am told 10 Australian dollars should get 100% good heavyweight low iron cotton even for obese sizes. I saw decent cotton shirts for usd 3 at the markets in middle non-tourist Vietnam.

In Hoi Anh, take you favorite over, and they will clone it for you, exactly without saving a few cms here and there. They will pull the cheap button trick, and substandard collar stiffeners trick if you let them.

Locals in Bangladesh and China do ok, but I not going there, nor do I speak the lingo. Pakistani m8 told me Shenzen will do you an Armani clone at a bargain rate.

I know of good ones in HCM and HK USD40 per shirt, but at those prices why bother.

While here, any good ones in
HCM,BKK,Cambodia,HCM,Hoi Anh,SIN, KUL and if they are good what does a full cotton shirt go for? (my benchmark)

I am told BKK has some wonderful deals, but all sours, as they are not right/wonky - unless you want a Safari Suit and that 70's look. Fabric has a weave, and it is tempting to use left overs, so sewn on sideways or upside down, so it reflects light differently, looks a different color (but 100% ok at first glance).

Poorer places like Cambodia seem to source home made cotton that falls apart/sags in a few washes, and sew on coughpy buttons that don't present well.
Veitnam. Many horror stories, but mostly their mindset can't compute fantastically fat foreigners, and their 'clone' means not exactly, and always smaller (HCM)
In Hoi Anh they understand westerners and make tourist sizes mostly correctly, at tourist prices.

A good Taylor in KUL would be great, as Malaysia has SURFACE postage is 1/3 of the price of either Singapore or .vn and even Thailand. If you can wait, always post your stuff in Malaysia. Also some Malaysian Post Offices are open on SUNDAY's and public holidays around Christmas Time .

So where are the best tailors - or links to a BB.

Based on a recommendation from AFF, I went and got a suit and shirts made at Lee Baron in HKG. Probably a little more expensive than some of the bargain basement tailors, but I've been v happy with the results ... it's incredibly nice having clothes that actually fit properly :)

Notzac, how much did the suit/shirts set you back? Im in HKG and China in Nov so am keen to get some more suits done for my entry into the corporate world (graduation present for myself).

Anyone know any good tailors in Shenzhen? My mandarin is okay for an aussie.

Suit and three shirts came to a bit under AUD 700.

I don't know of any, no.

In Singapore I used Mohans. Google it as he has a website. Price depends on what material you use. I had 2 made for $800. Have been very happy with them. Oh and they were 2 trouser suits.

I was told Armani knockoffs with minor tailoring done for under $200 usd, and seconds for $100 if you appear dull. China.

Meanwhile my Tailor thought Hoi Anh best.
Suits $50 and up (usd); shirts (7-14) but usd 25 if you look dull.
Contacts say HCMC more expensive - real .vns never use those shops.

Places like Lowes import suits from Fiji which are said to cost $25 landed.
Mind you the fabric has the breathing qualities of a plastic bag.
If places like DJ's sell rack suits of mediocre fabric for 300 on sale, then max import cost would be 80-100 mehinks aud.

I'm sure the suit from HK was first class, and pleasant to shop for, but this number is double Thai/BKK/Pattaya upmarket places .

I do have one tip. Bargain hard, and lie that you are leaving 1 day earlier. That way you can have adjustments made, and take a piece to another tailor for QA - they always criticize others work. Then go back and say .. not double stitched, rayon lining cough.

I'll be in both Singapore and HK for 3 week periods each. Which location do people think is going to offer me a better deal in terms of quality and price for tailored shirts and maybe a suit?

Do you know about fabric quality and dealt with these guys before specifically Understanding their sales techniques?

Not really, but from this thread it appears one has to be on the ball with these types!

Did you end up getting an answer, or go to a tailor in either Singapore or HK?

I'm due in both places in the next 2 weeks, and thinking of taking a visit. I'm a geek with no fashion sense.... so my fabric + price foo is minimal.

Both Singapore and HK will be significantly more expensive than other places.
I've heard good rack made, incl Armani copies are available just across the border, with adjustments from HK.

In my last .Vn shop, prices were up, USD 15 Shirt, quality down, and I needed 2 adjustments. Ethiopia and Pakistan are wonderful (for Tailoring) - if you have lots of time.

The original poster didn't answer my question, but through a relative I discovered a tailor in Hong Kong that I went to, located at the Kwai Fong MTR station on the Tsuen Wan line. I spent about A$1,000 for 3 suits (each coming with 2 pairs of trousers), and 4 shirts. Everything is hand-stitched. You'd need a Cantonese speaker to use this guy though.

Hong Kong definitely has the better reputation in terms of skills and quality, Singapore has plenty at the tourist end of the market but things thin out if you're looking for quality as compared to HK,

Still, there are a handful of good options if you know where to look - you could try some of the options in the Singapore Tailor Guide website as a starting point

For Penang, definitely try Suit City Fashions.

You can get a great fitted suit with pretty good fabric custom made quickly.

Contact info should be able to be found at suitcityfashions.com

I got one made for a conference and liked it so much that I got a second made before leaving Penang.
All the best.
