YVR for Olympics - late stage booking - should we?

As much as I'm normally in to spontaneous travel (and am v guilty of doing so before) .. given you won't really have an opportunity to spend time there, I'd suggest putting the $$ towards the next trip and passing on the Winter Olympics. It'd be pretty cool, but maybe go to the next one instead?

I'd do it.... in fact I am doing it (not the Opening Ceremony though).

Check out Stubhub 2010 Winter Games Opening Ceremonies Tickets - Vancouver Winter Games Opening Ceremony Tickets at StubHub!

I've got 2 tickets through them and 2 through the AOC (both at inflated prices :()

Stubhub are owned by eBay, but have a guarantee that you will get inside the event somehow (I guess you will get your money back in the worst case). This would be better than eBay. Stubhub have a pick-up ticket office in the city. If you buy on eBay and the ticket is a dud, you are stuck.

I used Stubhub for MLB All-Star tickets last year and had no problem (although they are MLB approved).

Good luck with the accommodation. Victoria on Vancouver Island may be an option for you. I'm staying on a couch with friends near downtown :-) Maybe try some places out of town a little or even just over the US Border and rent a car to the outskirts of the city (then public transport into the city)

The events are spread out considerably with some events taking place at Cypress which is only a short drive past North Van, but others like the downhill etc are at Whistler which is about a 90min plus drive (depending on the weather). From the time you line up it takes just over 3 hours on the ferry to get from Dukes Point on Vancouver Island to Horseshoe Bay, and then 3 hours back doesn't leave much time for looking at events. I think getting a rental (apart from being nearly impossible at that time of year) would not be a good option, but as you say public transport in Vancouver is quite good. Even if you were to get accommodation just into USA, then you are subjected to the wait at the Peace Arch boarder crossing boarder, or even cut up through the crossing at Aldergrove. Overall, a lot of travel and (I believe) a lot of wait times.

If considering spending $10K, go for broke and stay at Whistler.

All up, its sitting at about $10k min.
So what do you guys think? A few people who i've spoken to either sit in the "Your Crazy, don't do it" or the "GO GO GO" camps.
What do the experts think?
:?: :?: :?:

No expert sorry... but I guess if you matched each dollar with a contribution to a Haiti relief fund that would make the trip even more fruitful! Just a thought...

I’d do it, but I’d have booked much earlier. It’s going to cost a lot now as you say, so for me, I obviously couldn’t do it. If you have the money though… why not :p

Also, as others have mentioned, generally TV coverage is better anyway ;)

Centurion have come back with opening ceremony tickets that can be bought from a broker with the Amex. A tickets are $2500, B tickets are $2000 and C are $1500.... each. So the overall $10k figure is likely to rise to about $13,000. My partner and I are in discussions, but given the increased cost and the dire accommodation situation its looking less likely the closer we get. Seattle was thrown around as a good alternative, however 4 hours on a Amtrak train doesn't quite fill me with glee
