Yupp Ideas west coast to east coast

I am going to the US late september / early october. I will be based primarily in SFO, while there I am doing couple of SFO-SEA Yupp runs.

My return flight from the US departs from EWR and I am finding it really hard to find reasonable Yupp fare to the east coast area. So basically I am looking for suggestions / advice for Yupp fares from SFO/SEA/LAX to NYC area...

Unfortunately SF/LA to NYC are probably the least likely routes to find good YUPP fares, although they may exist.

How long do you have for the trip? How much are you prepared to pay, total and in $/SC? How do you feel about Haiti?

Your best bet for good value YUPP runs is probably via the Caribbean, but they'll take a couple of days. But if you don't have the time or money, it's not worth exploring further.

Get a cheap fair out to HNL and look from there to the Carribean and back to EWR. Again, a few days worth of travel but you can rack up the SC's.

Note it should also have been possible to book -LAX-DFW-MIA- instead of -LAX-MIA-, for a total of 570SCs instead of 480, at the cost of extra travel time.

2. If a YUPP only upgrades you by one class, how can you tell which is the next class up, Business or First?
3. What is the best way to find the SC's that will be awarded using the AA site rather than Mileage Monkey?
4. If you are to get the upgrade using a YUPP fare, do you get it for the entire journey or can it be that you get it for some legs of the route and not others? At what point do you know?
5. What is the best way to check on First Class seat availability

I can offer some help, I think.

Question 1: SCs are earned per flight sector (ie. each individual flight number). So, for example, if you flew HNL-DFW-MIA, you'd earn SCs for HNL-DFW and DFW-MIA, not HNL-MIA.

Question 2: 95% of AA's domestic flights are two class - Coach (Economy) and First. I think you'd only find competitive YUPPs on flights with these two cabins, not three.

Question 3: Don't worry about the AA site. I use Great Circle Mapper by inputting the journey (for example, in the above example, simply enter HNL-DFW-MIA) and then use the QF status credits table to determine the number of SCs per flight.

Question 4: Individual flights only. That is, you need to play the 'lottery' for each flight. That said, evidence on AFF suggests that not flying in First on one of these fares (ie. a downgrade) is very unlikely. You may well not know until you have actually boarded as it's my understanding that even if you have a boarding pass for a First seat, you still have the chance of being bumped down (although I'm not certain of this).

Question 5: Use Expert Flyer. However, you need to check for availability in P class more often than F. (My knowledge on this one is a little sketchy so it would pay to wait for someone else's advice on this.)

First go to aa.com and select your airports and choose price and schedule for search.
look at the instant upgrade column and select the cheapest price with most stops.
Most AA domestic flights are only Y and F.
Next click on flight details and you will see the mileage-and from QFs SC chart you can work out the SCs you will earn.
The upgrade will be for the whole journey usually-aa.com will point out if not available on a particular sector.

Question 2: 95% of AA's domestic flights are two class - Coach (Economy) and First. I think you'd only find competitive YUPPs on flights with these two cabins, not three.

I think the three-class flights are only SFO-JFK and LAX-JFK.

Question 4: Individual flights only. That is, you need to play the 'lottery' for each flight. That said, evidence on AFF suggests that not flying in First on one of these fares (ie. a downgrade) is very unlikely. You may well not know until you have actually boarded as it's my understanding that even if you have a boarding pass for a First seat, you still have the chance of being bumped down (although I'm not certain of this).

My understanding (and experience) is different. Barring cancellations or other irregular operations which necessitate a change of flight, you will be in first class. When you book, you can choose your seat in first class.

Question 5: Use Expert Flyer. However, you need to check for availability in P class more often than F. (My knowledge on this one is a little sketchy so it would pay to wait for someone else's advice on this.)

I think you're pretty much spot on except there is the odd 777 that has a domestic sector of an international flight.
