Hello,

I was hoping to start a 140K oneworld trip in February next year. My first chosen continent is South America so looking for a flight to Santiago. Ideally from Canberra, but getting to Sydney by other means is no problem. I also wouldn't mind having a <24 stop over in Auckland but if I don't it is not too much of a problem.

Knowing that SCL flights are often hard to get, I have tried to be proactive and be organised 353 days in advance despite the fact that I know I will get a point penalty to add the extra flights later on.

My planned trip is as follows

Canberra - Sydney - (Auckland) - Santiago
Santiago (or Lima) - Miami
Toronto - London
London - Cape Town
Johannesburg - Hong Kong
Hong Kong - Canberra

There have been no Y award seats released for 8,9,10,11 and now 12 Feb. There have been 1 award J seat on each of 8,9,10 on the codeshare QF321 but nothing on QF27 (I don't mind whether I go on the direct or codeshare - as I say, going on the codeshare I would probably organise some time in AKL). I don't really want to go business for two reasons - one I only have 220K points although I could possibly get the rest through applying for Amex Platinum and would like to still have a points balance regardless, but secondly, I don't know if it will be harder later on to get J seats rather than Y.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Are you Qantas Platinum? If so, you may request a Y award seat be made available. Similarly, if someone in your family is Platinum, that person could request it and you could do a famiy transfer of points (limited to 100k annually, however).

I just did a quick search and I can see a Y award with QF SYD-AKL and LAN AKL-SCL (QF codeshare) on 7 February and two of those combinations available on 10 February. The availability may be greater, however, due to my status.

Hi Danger,

Sadly I am only bronze. Sounds to me (from your post and a PM someone else sent me)that there are flights available on 6, 7, 10 but they are only available for higher status (my girlfriend is silver and Q club and it isn't coming up).

I don't think anyone in my family is still a platinum. Dad always was but in the last few years all his work flights were Virgin and over the past 12-18 months Mum has been pretty crook so he hasn't done any work travel so I don't know if he even has any status there. (not that it is relevant here)

I guess the $64 million question is if or when those flights will become more widely available.

Thanks for your help.
