Would you say bye to SWMBO or HWMBO for an upgrade?

Seems a few would!

The survey of the travel habits and wishes of 38,000 Australians by travel website Wotif.com has revealed the best perks airlines could offer, with free luggage the top pick snaring 34 per cent of the votes.......Nearly half (44 per cent) of respondents said they would happily take a delayed flight in the hopes of scoring a better seat, while 19 per cent said they would even abandon their partner.

If I did, I could see it ending badly..... for me.

If there's only the two of us, J-F long haul :
Absolutely :D
With kids :
No way
I wouldn't expect Shrek to knock back the offer of an op-up in the above circumstances either, in fact I'd think he was crazy if he did
( maybe that makes me crazy ;) )

Well you could very well be saying "bye to SWMBO" if you took the upgrade ;)

I would offer the upgrade to SWMBO and I would sit in whY.

The alternative is just not worth it.

I made that mistake when Mrscove was pulling a sick day so she was asleep when I hit the button for one First Class points deal to Los Angeles and then put her in best available which was a business class seat.
As a lucky break I managed to fix it with one week to go so I haven't seen the consequences!
It could have been quite ugly.

First time - was sick as a dog leaving HGK, had an argument about the kids in the lounge (as you do), I lost the argument and as she walked away with a smile....got paged to the lounge desk, where they asked if I would mind being moved into J....I simply said, not a problem:!:

Second time - late starter to carry the bags for a conference she attended in LAS. I booked at the last minute in PE (same as SWMBO) out of BNE, when selecting seats I noticed that I had access to the J cabin......selected J & fessed up however, offered to swap seats. Upon check-in was very pleasantly surprised to see that we both got upgraded.

Third time - return trip LAX-BNE, seated in the Flagship lounge and got paged, went to the desk & saw that I was about to be given a J BP, stupidly opened my mouth & mentioned that I was actually traveling with my wife.....J BP was never handed over & I was dropped like a school bag! Of course, I dutifully returned to the wife & explained that since they could upgrade me only & not YOU I knocked it back:mrgreen: The frequent flyer bonuses that followed were way better than any others I've received by an airline;)

Given I get to sit in J or F a lot I would have no hesitation letting her take my J to F upgrade. I don't love anyone enough to fly whY long haul.

Haven't say in a premium cabin yet for longer than 45 mins... Had an op up from years ago when JAL did the Sin-Kul leg.

If I did the above, would be the last time I'll be able to board a plane

Interesting hypothetical question that I have yet to face (thankfully).

I think that it depends on the length of the flight (as far as Mrs Flying Fox) is concerned. ADL-MEL she wouldn't give a hoot. MEL-NYC would be a different conversation.

Marriage has enough potential for conflict without throwing a grenade like that into the mix

I rejected a J upgrade on Thurs, travelling with Mr Katie and Little Miss. I felt like cough (food poisoning previous night & then a day at Disneyland!). I told the CSM when he did my WP greeting that I was feeling ill, in case I needed to try to run to the loo during takeoff or something like that. He later told me that he could slip me up into J after it was dark and Little Miss was alseep. I said no, even though I had little intention of being primary caregiver for most of the flight.
Mr Katie told me to take it, so I'd feel better in AKL & he and Little Miss could share the four seats we had, instead of the three of us.
I then pretty much feel asleep. :(

I wouldn't do it. I spend enough time flying solo for work that when flying with someone else I enjoy the company.

I would be happy enough if they took the upgrade though.

I couldn't do it. Mrs MatF is not a good flyer, and has a habit of sinking her claws, err, I mean nails into the closest arm at the hint of any turbulence.
I guess that arm should be mine :(

If my partner took the opportunity for an upgrade I might do the same. By seeing who else in Y would like to become Mr Justchecking..., I'm a firm believer in equality in relationships. ;)

We don't always travel together. Sometimes I may have a week where I have to work in a city in the US. Mrscove might land a week later to miss the conference or trade show so it is possible we could travel in different classes or even with different airlines. I would always try to get Mrscove an equivalent seat as matter of fair play.
This year we will have been travelling overseas for 40 years and I think she remembers at least one time when I failed!
