I suspect the $60 thing is a symptom of them experiencing a lot of non compliance and are trying to get the guest's attention

Problem is, I often don't read the cards and notices all around the place. I noticed this one though, more from luck than anything. I am guilty of occasionally leaving the washed dishes on the sink to dry (thinking it saves dirtying and washing a tea towel) because when I travel, my dirty dishes usually amount to a wine glass, a water glass, a coffee cup and a tea spoon. I nearly always eat out or in the restaurant as I don't want to be traipsing around buying groceries for what is usually just one night (bottle of wine excluded).

At $220 for a bed and a shower with a little bit of power for hot water, lights and chargers (the TV didn't even go on), I honestly think an expectation for an additional $60 to do the dishes is rude, I'm afraid. I even ensure the lounge cushions are back as they were when I arrived so I'd be pretty annoyed if I saw an extra $60 billed to the card.

You could always wipe out the cups with a dirty cloth as the hotel staff at some hotels reputedly do!

Back when I was a young fella, I did a bartenders course (got 100%...only one in the class to do so) and we were taught not to dry glasses with a cloth as it leaves residue. I guess that lesson stuck as I usually wash glasses then rinse with fresh water and leave to air dry. Occasionally, I pick up a glass from a hotel and it's so grubby that the glass looks more like it's frosted! I wonder if I can back charge the hotel for the $60 washing fee?

PS - not the room I just stayed in. Apart from the wash-up charge, everything else was fine and it had what I love, a balcony to kick back and enjoy a wine and this one was overlooking the fabulous Whitsundays, so who can really complain.

The whole experience of going on a holiday is damaged If you are bombarded with all kinds of potential extra charges. What happens if accidentally the guest brakes a glass or spill red wine on the carpet?
I must say that I was never charged for any of the above although I did have a few minor accidents in serviced apartments and I also may forgot to wash a coffee mug if I was rushing in the morning.

That's what I thought! The reality is, I nearly always clean up before I leave, with just the bed unmade (obviously) and the towels left in the bath or shower base. Everything else is pretty much the way it was when I walked in, but when I saw that sign, I thought it was rude to be honest. $60 to wash the dishes......good money if you can get it I suppose.

When we stay in a serviced apartment with self-catering which we may use, the first thing my other half does is wash all the dishes...does not trust previous guests or property staff to have done a proper job. Seemed OTT to me at first but the more I hear the more I think it makes sense. (Not suggesting your own dish washing skills are anything less than exemplary )

I'd feel pretty awkward if the cleaners were doing my room while I was in it. I think I'd feel obliged to help out.

If I'm in the room during the day it's usually lounging around (in a robe!) so only ask for a towel swap and a few extra soaps.

Most housekeeping staff would leave their cart outside door to prevent others walking in on them.

I do not see the big deal - I am regularly happily tapping away on computer keys as housekeeping go about their cleaning when I am in hotels in China - no biggie to them - no biggie to me - YES sometimes I do leave and have a coffee then come back - no biggie at all IMHO. Plenty times I have returned to room whilst they are hard at it - again no biggie - they just check your key card to make sure it is your room then I proceed to computer at desk whilst they finish.

Recently was in Holiday Inn Sydney China Town. Asked the cleaning lady to come back as my 4 yr old was having afternoon nap. Was told: now or never! as the cleaners were going home after. Have never had such reply.


Was in a Middle East hotel earlier in the year. Left the room when cleaners arrived to go to gym. Came back 1 hr later and he was still working in the room. Made me realize how much work it was to do a whole room clean.

60+ minutes is way too long for cleaning a room with guest still in- house.
