World Debit Mastercard now widely available

The CommBank World Debit Mastercard is now widely available, after being in a quiet invite only trial for the past few years - you just have to have an existing Debit Mastercard, and then you can switch to the World Debit Mastercard from NetBank or the CommBank app.

$10/month fee, (though allegedly discounts are available for some CommBank Yello tiers - $5 off for Gold, $10 off for Diamond (making it free), you can switch back to the free Debit Mastercard but can't switch back to the World Debit Mastercard for 3 months afterwards.

$0 fee from CommBank for withdrawals at ATMs overseas, no international transaction fees, two Mastercard Travel Pass airport lounge passes, and international travel & shopping insurance (PDS here)

The only advantage I can see for this debit card over other (free) versions (Macquarie, Bankwest, UBank etc) is the travel insurance.

Paying $10 month to access that benefit could be worthwhile, although the included Zurich-based overseas insurance policy is less useful to me than the Covermore policy I regularly use (primarily because of the defined and covered ‘missed connection’ part of the policy). I also note the hire car excess reimbursement from Zurich is a stingy $2250.

I assume that the switching back and forth would result in a new card being issued each time so I probably won’t bother changing from my basic CBA debit MC (which serves as my ‘keycard’ for withdrawing cash from CBAs dwindling ATM network)

Actually an interesting proposition if you hold CBA Yello Gold or Diamond to gain access to the 2 lounge passes per World Debit MC for $5 or $0 / month per card.

If one has a mortgage with offset accounts, one can add multiple World Debit MCs to gain the 2 passes per MC.

Once used, swap back to the free MC.

It looks like the World Debit MC is also an eligible transaction card for earning Commbank Yello status, their other rewards program that isn't tied to the Awards CCs, which is itself being devalued after 1 October 2025 with the loss of all airline transfer partners bar Velocity

$5 monthly cashback of the WD MC card fee for Yello Gold tier, $10 cashback if you maintain Diamond

I used Yello to renew Uber One membership every 6 months so all that would mean is uber transactions now come off the WD card instead of an Awards credit card

I'm confused by this. Cover-more is owned by Zurich. The applicable CBA policy and the (presumably direct from) Cover-more policy may have different rules, but they're both Zurich. The CBA policy seems to cover a good range of missed connections - including prepaid travel arrangements (which is the one often missing from other policies).
