Day 12, halfway through our trip, and heading back to the big smoke. For the next 3 nights we will be staying in Yokohama. We haven’t visited this city before, even though it is not at all far from Tokyo.
So back to Hachinohe station and on to the shinkansen. On the Hayabusa it is slightly less than 3 hours to Tokyo station. The initial plan was to then to have lunch at our favourite gyoza place in Tokyo, Chao Chao gyoza in Ginza. But sadly it does not open for lunch. So instead we paid a quick visit to the Travelers Factory store in Tokyo Station where I purchased a few items but also collected their special New Year stamp. Then onto Yokohama, a short 20 minute ride on the Tokaido main line.
After all our time in the northern prefectures, the mass of humanity in Tokyo and Yokohama has been slightly disconcerting. And in particular the number of non-Japanese tourists. In the last few weeks of travel we were, in the main, the only non-Japanese tourists we saw. In the main, there domestic tourists were few and far between as well. The places we have been the main travellers appear to be business travellers. So it has been very easy to navigate train stations and the like because although busy, they were not overwhelmingly busy. The main observation I had on arrival in Tokyo Station was the astounding number of Australians with ski gear and big bags trying to get through the crowds to the
shinkansen. Personally I was quite pleased not to have our big bag, which I sent off last night and which we should see again tomorrow.
In Yokohama we are staying at the Knot Hotel, a few minutes walk from Yokohama station. The room is quite spacious with an actual sofa, and reasonably priced at 71300 yen for 3 nights with breakfast. The only downside is no view - just the rooftop when the window is open. On balance we feel the extra space is a fair exchange, at least for a few nights.
