Wine Glasses, Decanters etc

Not much talk about decanters. I don't have an actual decanter but I am unscientifically using a labatory flask as a decanter substitute ;)

Personal feel, and I acknowledge these things are different for everyone:

The only decanter I need is my glass.

10 minutes resting (breathing, etc) in my beautiful stemmed glass

is all any half-decent red needs.

Any other handling is poppycock.

IMHO :)

Reidel sells little steel balls you can use to clean out any accumulated guff in decanters.

Sodium Metabisulphite is a good alternative. Or even teaspoon of bleach in 2 litres of water and left overnight.

Rice in with vinegar or bicarbonate of soda/water (probably also works with Sodium Metabisulphite) often works and is cheap to try.

Should the J lounge glasses not be to your liking, then SYD J lounge has a selection of fine red wine glasses if you are in the know. Technically they are part of the epiQure 'pay per glass' cabinet near the entrance. But I won't tell if you don't.

I use Steradent tablets to clean glasses (purchased solely for this reason - I have all my own teeth :D).

It's just sodium hypochlorite solution or bleach you know... But will do the job nicely.

A "Glass Tasting" hey... How do you taste a glass? Grind it up and dissolve into the wine?

I'm glad they have skipped Brisbane, this event looks stupid!
All jokes aside, have been to one of these or similar where the idea is to see if the same wine tastes different in different glasses. While I'm not sold on the "you must buy Riedel" part of this, I'm certainly convinced that you can get sometimes a considerably different tasting experience with different glasses, as is the theory. Some may disagree but unless youve done straight comparison of the same wine in different glasses Id suggest you havent applied much rigour to the test.

I do like Riedel glasses incidentally but you can get very good glasses considerably cheaper which are IMO good enough (Benzer from Victoris Basement or Spiegelau's from Peter of Kensington or VB amongst others).

Deliberately OT as not Wine Glasses - but would any good AFFer have suggestions where I can buy Spanish Gin and Tonic Glasses here in Australia? Pref Melbourne.

"Product Description:Height: 178mm - Diameter: 116mm - Capacity: 696ml. Machine Made, Tritan Crystal, Made in Germany. This glass is based around a wide bowled balloon shape, often served in Spain, it's actually the best way to drink a Gin and Tonic "

I don't know about them not being a wine glass - at 696 mls !!!! it is the wine glass for those that only want to have ONE glass ;)

Anybody who has actually drunk a G & T in Spain out one of these glasses will fully understand why I am desperate to get my paws on some.
