Window Shades UP or DOWN?

This topic comes up often.

I guess it is up to the individual unless it affects others. Personally I am not fussed up or down but there are times when the sun shines on the IFE screen.

The reactions can be similar to reclining. Why can't a passenger look out the window if that is what they want to do?

Usually up unless it's too bright, hot or affecting others. I like looking at the landscapes below :)

I'm generally a fan of shades up and always try to get a window seat so I can look outside. I quite like flying over Europe as you can often see other planes wizzing by through the busy airspace.

Of course, being considerate of others is important. Glare that is hitting others' IFE is an obvoious example where one should pull down the shade. At night there's usually not much to see (or much that can be seen) so I pull them down then too. And with medical issues such as CE's, it's a no brainer to pull it down.

In the interests of my fellow passengers comfort, I don't mind keeping them down while its raining outside.

I generally have them down if I am trying to watch IFE/ iPad to stop the glare but will raise them to look at the landscape/ sunset.

I'd love to raise them for sunrise etc but am generally considerate to others around me.

Regardless, I will always have them down in bright sun if I am seated on the right side of the plane as my right cheek is sensitive due to a scar area.

I have a good memory but short

I personally prefer up most of the time - though my long-haul flying is basically just to Asia (minimal time zone difference) and even when it's dark I'm not fantastic at sleeping on planes, so I often just give up and try to stay as alert as possible instead... (Well, I find it hard to sleep on long-haul flights - for some reason, I'm quite capable of dozing off on CBR-SYD...)

Shades down for me. QF Row 9 portside on 737-800 today was windowless.

And aisle please.

Shades have never really been of concern to me unless, as many have said, the sun is just too bright. I know that my mum has a thing for the shades though, she hates an artificially dark cabin during a perfectly good day time flight. On recent flights I've also noticed that economy cabins had a lot more shades up and more light in general compared to all shades down and dark business cabin on board SQ.

I usually leave them up unless the sun is directly in my eyes or creating glare on my screen.

Well on a flight lasting more than 15 minutes. Looking out of the window at clouds isn't going to do it for me. Down, with a glass of wine and the IFE showing a good movie.
