Thanks Mattg, great photos. Camera which phone please? Maybe airlines could compromise on this - shades minimum half down and decent eyeshades Throughout the cabin. Oh, who am I kidding?

I am definitely a shades up guy especially if travelling during the day. We recently flew back from Hawaii (unfortunately by Jetstar) a morning meal was served then the announcement "you all must be so tired we are pulling the shades down. We just had a great nights sleep at our Hotel why would we need to go back to sleep again. SHADES UP DURING THE DAY.

Maybe airlines should consider splitting the plane in two, half shades up and half down. That way the simple-minded can spend the entire flight gawping at the amazing views (OMG! clouds!) without bothering the rest of us.

Just put those who want the blinds down over the wings.

I don't see what the fuss is about.
Surely if you want to keep your window shade open, you just close the door.
What is so hard about that?

Sorry, but "during the day" could have another meaning.

3pm AEST = 8pm PDT (LAX)

Many pax would prefer to adjust their body clocks by destination time, not necessarily departure-point time.

You must be a business person who flies ALL the time everywhere.....Yawwwnnnn.
Me who is simple-minded enjoys flying, and being simple-minded, enjoys simple things such as clouds.
Try sitting on one of those, and complaining about the view.
I feel much better now thank you.

Some of the posters here need to take a good long look in the mirror - thread title is 'Window Shades UP or DOWN' - opinions only required - you want to contribute to yet another thread being destined to waste bin? We are all entitled to our opinions - please respect that.

To refer passengers as simple-minded is an insult.

There is, of course, a simple solution to the issue. Shades down when it light outside and up when it is dark. That way those that like to look out of the window can do so without annoying those who don't. Personally I think this is pure genius and keeps everyone happy. *

This and many more tips and tricks will be published in my book - Hancock - Solving Life's Travel Problems in a Simpler and Fairer Way, with added Enhancements. (Catchy Eh?)

:p

*It may, of course, be a little disappointing for those who like to see something when they look out of the window, but we all have to compromise.....well apart from me of course.
:p

I prefer and usually get a window. I cant wait for those "glass sided" full view planes they tell us are coming.
I vary depending on what time, how tired I am, what's to see outside etc...the point is the blinds DO move up and down so are designed to be used.
I always travel with a hat and sunnies to cover my eyes if I want to sleep on short flights, and an eye mask on long ones...don't expect the rest of the plane to suit you.
It's no different at night when 95% of people are asleep there are always a couple of people with a light on reading a book or fiddling with something. No one tells them to stop.

On some flights I have seen the whole plane with shades drawn as we boarded, it was hot outside and kept the plane cooler, that's sensible.
Another time at Dubai 42 degrees outside, long delay so was watching TV, and the Gestapo told me the blinds MUST be up due to safety concerns.
I asked what safety concerns we are on the ground, at the gate, not moving and showed her at least 5 other windows on the other (not as sunny) side with shades down.
She leant over me and pulled it up, she never went to the other side and put them up???

Seems its just as personal a choice for the FA as the passengers.

While I agree with the sentiment, the adjective is apt in many circumstances.:) Of course, just as the OP, you have the right to be personally offended if you wish. Doesn't bother me.
