it seems to me that there will be little difference in actual flight times. Consider MEL/SYD to SIN 7 hours then SIN to LHR 14 hours total 21 hours. Alternatively MEL/SYD to PER 4 hours then PER to LHR 17 hours total 21 hours. The flights from MEL and SYD would be all the way on an international flight eg. A380 whereas from PER to and from east coast ports would be by domestic flight eg B737. Also after the first 7 hours it is nice to get out and walk a while even get a drink or coffee and the SIN airport is ideal for this. Then back on board for another 14 night time hours can be coped with.

Therefore my vote would be no. If Qantas want to operate a 787 then let them operate out of Melbourne or Sydney or even Brisbane.

In the spirit of giving, here is what would entice me to fly PER-LHR-PER direct on Qantas.

All business class config
Putting the exclusivity back into flight. Would also mean QF could justify a price premium, cost savings on weight (fuel burn, catering, baggage, etc.) reduced liability, more flexibility, less crew.

First class Perth lounge
Allow access for all pax on LHR direct, and OWE/EK Plat etc. There needs to be a ground services drawcard to take the flight for eastern based customers. Caters for revenue from other airlines in Per to top tier pax.

Increased status credit & points earn
The direct flight will earn fewer points/sc than all other options, so, to cater to the userbase who have high loyalty propensity take-up, AND to justify the price premium, offer a 25% status credit and points bonus.

The current proposed config and product essentially catering only to WA-based passengers.
It's not a game changer and quite frankly has no sex appeal.

Flying MEL-PER-LHR means swapping MEL and DXB F lounges for MEL and PER J lounges, giving up first class or the hope for an upgrade/op-up to first class BUT I'm still going to do it because I'm an AvGeek and must try one of the longest flights in the world :)
