Will Qantas Offer Double Status Credits before Mooted FF Program Changes in 2024?

But if freeloading QF elites rely on hand out SCs to attain elite status then they obviously don't fly too often and don't clog the lounges.

The elite numbers will naturally decrease once handouts have stopped as they have.

I class myself as a freeloading QF elite ATM, relying on the status support to maintain platinum in the coming year 🙂. I do fly often and try my best to clog any lounge that will admit me. 🤦🏼‍♂️

That is not necessarily correct. Earn via other oneworld airlines and/or cheap DSC bookings Make use of the benefits using cheap Y tickets or reward seats.

Yep, plus during peak times each WP can bring multiple hangers-on into the lounge. Think school holidays and the SYD F lounge …

That being said, I haven’t found the lounges busy and from QFs perspective the marginal cost of a not very valuable WP in the lounge is probably low considering the fixed costs of operating them.

Apart from the Perth Qpub at 5.30am, I've never seen the lounges too crowded unless bad weather is delaying flight departures.

The PER J lounge gets pretty busy when they close the QPub is closed later in the evenings. Last time I went to the J lounge there was no seats left due to both QPub and the Chairman's Lounge being closed.

Only reason I know the CL was closed is I heard the J lounge bar staff stressing that they didn't have fancy enough wine for the couple of CL members who they were expecting.

elsewhere you've recently indicated a preference for QR, VA, SQ and so on - totally fine and I fully understand your reasons - so no criticism implied.

With that as a background, is it fair to assume that you're using QF or OW services (QR as exception probably due to VA) because of your status extension in the main?

My point being that it's still likely a win for QF because you're paying, one way or another (even via reward bookings) for that - and it's probably revenue they otherwise would not get.

You're probably still ahead, but I wouldn't entirely call it freeloading per sé.

Half yearly results come out 22 Feb. Often there are big announcements around that event. Wouldn't be surprised if some of them relate to the frequent flyer program in some capacity (DSC, release of more seats, devaluation, etc etc).

The ranks were certainly overfilled in 2022-23, but even with DSC (which I would be willing to bet on showing up again in the next 2 months) I think there'll be enough of a natural cull as the last of the 'status supported' are let go. Members with a year ending 30 Sep 2024 will be that last group, for QFF WP & WP1.
A logical way would be to let the end of status support to play out. I doubt that DSC offers would materially increase the amount of new status holders but may keep a few current ones onboard and push a few "high silvers" over the line to SG.

Personally, I wish there will be a good old-fashioned DSC offer and an opportunity to use GV's in conjunction. If it's a +50% offer, then I may do a trip or two extra as status runs to hold onto the handcuffs. If no offer this year, then it'll most likely be a soft landing ahead next year (unless QF skips a year but does a DSC this time in 2025).

A wild guess: a large(ish) CR release on 23 Feb, a SC booster (+50% or DSC) on 1 Mar and Int'l sales on 14 Mar.
The potential devaluations will need sweeteners to dampen the noise...

I agree - I don't think it changes a lot. Annual & sometimes more frequent or targeted DSC promos have been a regular feature for QF Marketing for as long as I can recall, but certainly long before QF Loyalty were trying to support people by extending and discounting status attainment through the pandemic, and as far out as Sep 2023 (WP & WP1 20% status discounts). That status support and not DSC promos is what has caused the bubble in numbers.

With airfares up, business travel down (probably permanently), and the 'cost of living crisis' biting amongst the masses, a DSC isn't going to make much difference, at least not at the top tiers. QFF elite membership ranks are already starting to thin out, and by October 1st - when the last support initiative wears off - it should be more or less back to the target market groups reaching these levels, even if they have used DSCs to prop up their activity somewhat.

Cheers,
Matt.

I have used the DSC offers in recent years to achieve and maintain WP, but I have booked all my international flights for the current membership year and expect to achieve around 40SC in the 12 mths. I have reached point where I am happier flying with others and will drop back to Gold in 2025 quite happily. How times and perspectives can change. Not that I have a major dislike for QF, but a preference for others esp. EK.
