I am planning to book MEL-AUH using AAdvantage on EY and then book a flight to Europe from AUH also on EY but using Velocity.. The connection at AUH will only be a few hours but as the two bookings/tickets will be separate, will I need to show a visa for UAE at MEL at the time of check-in? I know aussies don't need a visa for UAE, this questions is on behalf of someone who does. If the check-in agent does ask for a visa, will showing the other booking that is departing the UAE within a couple of hours be enough?

Also will they be able to issue boarding passes for the onward flight from AUH or will the person have to go to the transfer desk? Travelling HLO so not concerned about baggage.

If the person is of a nationality that needs a 'hard' visa (ie stamp or similar in their passport), then the airline is unlikely to allow them to board in MEL without it. Having an onward ticket I don't think will be relevant - it doesn't confer any rights of entry to the UAE.

.... unless they are of a nationality who can get a visa on arrival. Actually, I thought Australians need a visa (on arrival) also?

Generally speaking if you have an onward ticket eg in your case AUH to Europe, that would be sufficient unless there was a requirement to hold a transit visa (like some South American countries need when transiting AKL) for the UAE.

This is assuming that despite having separate bookings into & out of AUH that your bags will be through checked from Australia to Europe & receiving both boarding passes when checking in at your Australian departure city. If the ground handler doing EK checkin won't through check on separate bookings then they would want to see the appropriate documentation eg visa if applicable for the UAE.
