Widebody on short hop domestic: do Qantas release extra J awards?

Hi all,

As luck would have it, QF are flying a widebody MEL-SYD at a time convenient to when the family needs to travel in a month or so.

I've picked up two J awards for the fun of it, because the kids will think it's grand. The J cabin is virtually empty... do QF ever release more domestic awards as a flight approaches if there is loads of space available?

Or is the best way just to take Y and bid for an upgrade (no status, so I'd be bottom of the heap)?

Qantas will release Business award seats mainly based on what proportion of the available seats they predict they will sell for $$$.

The more seats in the cabin, the more award seats may be made available.

If you need to travel take what you can get now and keep an eye out.

Yep. And if there are still extra J seats available on the day of the flight, you can request an on-departure points upgrade if booked in Y.

Great advice thanks, will keep an eye out.

Dont be too happy until the flight actually takes off.
I once made a booking, for one of the final QF flights on the 767s at that time, SYD - MEL, up until the night before the flight, it was listed at 767.
This was many years ago now.
It was a 6.30am or so dep from SYD.
I was so happy, thinking all my dreams had come at once.
Got to the gate, 6 I think it was listed as, oooh, I should have noticed, gate 6 at SYD is always the narrow body, yep, they had swapped my beloved 767 to a 737.
There is now a Thu SYD - BNE a330, but over the past 2 Thu, its been cancelled.
Good luck and I hope you make it.
The b787 or the a330, does have a niceness to it, tho a lot of people say, "a plane is a plane is a plane, what difference is it really between a wide and narrow body?..."

Bear in mind though, aircraft substitution is not that uncommon on such routes.

What is presently scheduled to fly vs what type of aircraft actually makes the flight can be two different things.
