QF recently added a flight during the day and therefore downgauged one of the daily 332 flights to 73H (QF597 BNE-PER dep 17:00 is affected by this change unfortunately) and added an extra 73H flight.

To rub salt into the 73H wounds, the 332 aircraft QF had been flying PER-BNE-PER used to be upgraded J aircraft more often than not, but when I flew PER-BNE-PER a couple of weeks ago, both flights (QF594 and QF767) were both ex-JQ 332 aircraft with the iPad minis. My next QF flights PER-BNE-PER in February are showing as the new 332 J however (as I have upgraded both ways).

I have now been booking VA PER-BNE-PER (when in Y) since the QF597 change came through, as I prefer ~17:00 flight from BNE and VA468 at 17:30 is a 332 (with the new J and currently triple base points).

I guess Qantas have chosen to go with frequency over capacity. Just like they have with the Jetconnect arrangement to NZ.

For a 5+ hour flight, I'm with you. Those 737s belong on shorter routes!

yeah my thought exactly- 5 hours with a one year old in a 737 no thanks!
now have to chose between schedule vs plane for this route!
Yeah i have a major dislike for the ex-jetstar buisness planes but love the new business suite so it is always tricky
thanks for the help as always

Has it increased from the 1xdaily return (the last time I checked was earlier this year)?

The reason for the 737 is the extra frequency at the expense of the capacity. There is no point flying the 332 if you are not going to fill it.

Also, in January, from Per-Syd on a Saturday nearly all flights were a 737, because I book to attend a 20/20 match in Sydney

Yeah, they often do that on weekends. One of the A330s is removed from trans-con service on weekends and sent to AKL. (Though I suspect they do this because the A330 isn't being used anyway, and not the other way around.)

Either way, it's annoying.

is this the seasonal Akl-per route or a TT route for the A330? I notice the seasonal route was only on the weekends.

Yes, I'm referring to the seasonal PER-AKL route that only operates on weekends. The aircraft used is an A330 that operates trans-continental flights during the week.

I wonder if QF could have created a subfleet of 737s with (world first?) lie-flat J seats, since the current seats simply aren't competitive on certain routes (e.g. PER-SIN and Jetconnect flights to NZ). It would also create some sort of product consistency with the 330s on East Coast-PER routes.

It wouldn't be a world first on a narrow body to have beds in the premium classes. I am sure QF have done the sums considering you'd lose some capacity on the subfleet and have decided it isn't viable.

It seems that QF's trans-Tasman pax are very loyal as J always seem full to me (when I'm in Y or J) even with far superior J products from EK and LAN therefore I suspect QF don't feel like they need upgrade their Jetconnect birds.

It could be a case of preference of schedule over product here?

I suspect given air NZ have most of their flights on Y Only 320's across the ditch they dont see a need too.

If a QF pax really wants flat bed they will pick an EK Flight, however it is at the most a 3hr 45min flight (MEL-AKL)

As a regular QF TT flyer in J based in NZ I can attest it is really schedule over product. The EK and to an extent LA schedules for NZ based flyers mean that you need to over night in either direction in Australia if you wish to use their flatbeds, rather than take early morning flights, get a day's worth of work and you can also fly back early evening getting another day's worth of work in Australia.
I did talk to some FAs about this and they have mentioned that Australian based flyers (based on the passports they see) tend to prefer leaving Australia in the morning so they can have an afternoon in NZ and also try to avoid the midnight arrival wake up 2-3 hours earlier than normal due to the time zone shift.
You really do not need the flatbed but the EK First cabin does offer a good indulgence once in a while.
